Hi all. I need help figuring this out. I have an 85 w250 with the 318, and an edelbrock carb. I have been having start-up problems....tough to start, then when it does fire, it smells real strong of gas, then runs good. Anyhow, I noticed today what looks like little splatters of oil on the ground near the exhaust pipes, where I normaly park it. Stuck my finger in the pipe, and it was real "sooty". could this be linked to the bad starting, or is the engine going south? Thanks for any insight.

Does this have the electric or manual choke? If it's electric, you may need to lean out the choke adjustment a bit.

Thanks for the reply. To lean the choke, is that turning those 2 screws in the front of the carb? in or out? It is electric choke.

No No, you loosen the 3 (?) screws on the choke housing an rotate it. You'll see little notches on the choke housing. Now I'm not sure which way you need to turn the housing, but it may have LEAN or RICH printed on the housing. I'd say turn it 2 notches lean.

Those TWO screws you're referring to are most likely the "Idle Air-Speed Adjustment Screws". They control the air/fuel mixture for the "transition" from idle-to-main jet fuel-air flow. Don't try to adjust them UNLESS you are having a problem with "hesitation" or "stumbling" when you first start to apply the gas. If you are, get back with us here and we'll try to talk you thru the proper adjustment procedures for them. (A tach and vacuum gauge will help with this adjustment too.)

well, adjusted the choke, and starts great now! As far as the stuff coming out of the exhaust pipe, it doesnt smell like anything, so I'll write it off as condensation. Thanks a million! I have saved alot of money fixing my trucks myself with info on these boards.
