Hi,
I have a 70ish stock 318 that I am going to do just a stock rebuild on. I want to keep the power stock, because im going to stuff it in a samurai. Does anybody know what the hp was stock?
I checked allpar, but didn't find what I was looking for. I think it was out of a truck.
thanks

Hmmmmm. That vintage of 318 say around 68-70 was rated at 210HP gross and around 177HP net.

Wow, that was quick!! What is the difference between the gross, and the net. And would it be the same for up to about a 72. I will try and find out the year of it. I do know it has the steel crank in it.

Gross HP is measured at the flywheel with no accessories added to the engine. Mopar HP ratings were like this prior to '72.

Net HP is measured at the flywheel with all accessories added and full exhaust. This is a "real world" HP rating.

This is the way it was relayed to me anyways.

I'd say around '73-'75 time period is when the HP rating started suffering because of emission laws and such. If you can give me the casting number off the block, I may be able to look up what year the engine is.

Thanks Dodgevanman. I will try and get the casting # this afternoon. Where do you go to look up that information. Also, what are the "shorter trannies" that Dodge has that will bolt up to it? The sammurai has a divorced t-case, so I can pick and choose a little.
Thanks again.

I think it has about 170. My dad has an 84, and I think thats what he told me it has.

Casting number is on the left side towards the rear of the engine block. Right above where the starter would be. It should start with a 2XXXXXX-318. I think that's the format.
