One of the last problems I need to tackle on my 1992 Dodge is the reverse lights. All the other lights work, the fuse looks good but for some reason in reverse the reverse lights do not come on. I swapped out the bulb to no avail.
The truck's parking break is disconnected (was like that when I got the truck, so there is no parking break) and it does have a wiring harness for the hitch.
Any suggestions on what to look for? I am going to test the power to the harness tonight, but was curious if anyone else ran across a problem like this and what could cause it.

See if your getting power to the sockets, but what it could be is the neutral safety/backup light switch on the transmission.

Thanks, I just saw some of your other posts on that too. I was just looking up the part on rockauto.com and the other auto parts suppliers to see if anyone had it. Looks like an inexpensive part. Going to check the power to the socket here in a few.
This is a manual transmission and I havn't looked for this yet, but said it should be left side just below the shifter.
Thanks for the info so far, when it comes to wiring I get lost on alot of this stuff :)

It looks like I am not getting juice to the light when its in reverse. Would this be the switch or a wiring issue?

Probably the switch.

I do not see this switch anywhere, I am thinking it is hidden somewhere I cannot get a light to. Is this usually an easy repair or a drop the transmission to get to it type of thing? Maybe I am missing something obvious, I don't know. I have taken the shifter cover off and can see from the top. According to the Chiltons manual this is behind and down from the shifter on the left hand side. I cannot see anything that resembles that and getting to it from under neath looks like it could be a problem as well as the gas tank runs right along there.
Any ideas?
Edit: 4x4 - 4 speed manual transmission.

These pics are from a 1989 Chrysler manual. The first is a 4speed-OD, the second is a straight 4 speed , New Process unit. I believe that the New process tranny was the only one used on the 4x4's though. Might be easier to just remove the shifter boot and look from there. If it is right there, turn the key on, and ground the wire. If the lights work, you know the switch is bad, if no lights, the wires are bad somewhere.

The switch may look like this.

Thanks for the image, I pulled the shifter boot off last night and cannot locate anything at all (might be because its hard to get my big head close enough to see as well), and I cannot see anything. I was using the new part to sort of find something similar with a wire attached and nothing. There are wires that go right over the top of the transmission near the shifter but havn't traced them to where they stop yet. Thanks much for all the information, I think its just going to take more time/work to actually find this thing.
Unfortunately being a firefighter got in the way of me working on this last night. Gonna take a look at it again tomorrow and see what I can find. Thanks again for all the help so far.
