I replaced water pump on my 1996 stratus and now the car runs real crappy, but only when coming to stop light or in idle. any suggestions on what this might be. The check engine light was on and the code pointed to the EGR so that was repleaced. Check engine light was out for about 2 days then came back, the code was now O2 sensor. That was replaced along with plugs and wires and cleaning of throttle body unit. Car still run terrible in idle and continues to stall at stop lights. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

if when changing the water pump the alt belt may be loose right?

Very possible. Might need a new serp. belt.

that was replaced when i changed the water pump. Just curious how can the alt make the car stall at stop lights and idle only?

Just tightened the alt and I may be crazy but seems to idle a little better or im just imagining it. As stated in the previous question how does this affect the idle of my engine?

According to a troubleshooting manual I found:

Rough, erratic or loping idle:
Vacuum leak, Leaking EGR gases into manifold at idle, Air filter clogged, weak fuel pump, head gasket, wear in timing belt/chain or sprokets, worn camshaft.

Stalling engine:
idle speed incorrect, water in fuel, clogged fuel filter, ignition system fault, spark plug wires, vacuum leak.

This manual is for 95 to 02 Stratus, Sebrings and Avengers, so some of that may not apply. Hope it helps.

BTW, I had a vacuum leak in a Mustang about a year ago and the only code that came up was an O2 sensor. The leak drove the mix lean. Since the only part of this the computer could see was the O2 sensor, that's what came up. You might want to check that route first. If you don't know how to find a vacuum leak, let me know and I'll tell you how I found mine.

I was having the same problem with a Neon I used to own. Tried fixing everything. It ended up being the Sensor and had to take it to the Dealership.:dunno:

check the pcv valve hose, mine was clogged on my car and was throwing all kinds of random codes. once I cleaned it out, the car ran perfectly.

I have a celica that did the same thing, some mechanics said it was vaccum, the toyota dealer adjusted the throttle body, still stalled got worse and worse. Finally one day I was out in the front yard poking around in it, and my neighbor comes (he's a mechanic) says is it getting spark? turns out I wasted like $150, the coil was bad. I hope your problem is something simple like that and you find it before you waste a ton of money.

Is it worse when you first start the engine ! Try turning all accessory off and see if it improves Then. Mine if I turn A/C off it idle's fine then ? I have 12.5 Volts Key off. 14 volts with engine running. Starts Fine ?? I have not figured mine out yet
