Am new here. Rented a 'Trep years ago, liked it, and have half decided to buy myself one as a fun/weekend car. Have read about tranny bugs, but they sound manageable.
Any one have any insights. Is the "ES" worth getting for the nicer details?
Again, looking at '95s or there abouts.

I went out and found one sooner than I had any idea. Sunday I looked at a couple losers that were too rough-looking to consider. Then I drove an nice looking Eagle that was full of assorted problems with the accessories, and had a suspension that rode like a skateboard. Next at a new car (Buick -Toyota -Mazda) dealer's used lot I spotted a couple more; an Eagle and "my" Intrepid.
The Eagle was lower in mileage and way out of my price range. They were asking $5K for my 'Trep w/117K miles... I wrote them check for $2500 and they accepted my Toyota truck sight unseen w/250K miles (I told them it needed an alternator and a battery. They still took it) in trade. I was glad to get the old truck outa my yard... as far as I;m concerned I paid a little over $2K, allowing for some I paid to get the old truck off my hands.
The car is immaculate... like absolute new inside. The tranny has a little rumble in 1st gear (didn't really notice it til the next day. That first Eagle was such a POS that my ass was relieved to feel something at all worthwhile), and there are few little paint chips from gravel or what-not here and there. But overall, its VERY nice. A steal for the money I spent. Even if I have to spend a couple grand for a rebuild, that would just pull it close to even. If I can get six months out of the tranny using the car as a weekend/evening ride, that value goes up.
I have a '90 4Runner that is my work truck and I will be keeping the 'Trep nice.
I don't even have 100 miles on it yet, but the 3.5 purrs like a kitten w/ allvthe power I remembered from the rental years ago and the ride is like silk. Everything else works just fine so far.
Thanks for interest (any at all) I have been on ****************** and have gotten some feedback there. I thought this board was about dead... maybe you're mostly truck types here.
