well, right now i've got hedman headers, through 2.5" pipes to flowmaster 40s, to 3" tips out the back..
i've been thinking about a few different setups,
-cut the mufflers off and run all 3" pipe out the back..
-no mufflers, run all 3" pipe and do turndowns..
-no mufflers, 3" pipe with a X-pipe and turndowns..
i've been thinking the 3rd would probably be the best.. from what i've understood, X-pipe's help with power and make it loud.
i'd like to make it louder, more rumble, and also, go with the setup that would have the most lowend power.

3" pipe, X-pipe, I would reconsider the NO muffler option if you plan on using the truck for any long drives. The harmonics from unmuffled exhaust can cause all sorts of problems for the driver. Like fatigue and hearing problems to name a couple. Been in some old muscle cars set up that way and it was'nt always comfortable.

This might be a dumb question, but how does one get by legally with no mufflers at all?
How would you not get pulled over every other block?
Plus, I was always under the impression that you needed some sort of back-pressure for the engine to run more efficiently....
Back in the day, with my Roadrunner and later on my Duster, I ran Hemi mufflers and still got pulled over evey now and then.....
But yeah, before you decide to go for the loud rumble, you really need to consider the other affects.... Vibrating your kidneys out of your kidney holes.... Can't hardly listen to the stereo.... Can't hardly talk to the passenger....

i would do the x pipe with turndown but i would also relook the x-pipe in thoery it is created to equall out the pressure for a dual exhaust but at the start off the exhaust it crams it into a piece about 3" wide(center of x pipe). i would look into an h-pipe it is similar but also it lets each side have is own type of path but if one side gets to much pressure it will equal both sides out and it will aslo sound good because it will be even.
And bherder-i know im my state (N.J.) u can do basically what u want to a car thats over 20 yrs old and is registered under historic plates, so if u have them u can do what ever you want to a car as long as its safe and drivable

Here in SC you can do almost anything you want to even new vehicles, nobody ever checks them. Although if it's really really obnoxiously loud they'll get you, but they usually seem to bust the ricers more than the V8 guys. I guess the Po-po like rumble too lol.
I say 3" pipe, Dr Gas X-pipe, and Flowmaster single-chamber race muffs w/ turndowns. Just make sure they turndown at least 2ft behind the front of the bed, so you don't get fumes up in the cab.

I would think if your truck rides anywhere near as rough as mine, that exhaust rumbling your internal organs has to be the least of your worries.
I have heard that the x-pipe is the best bang for the buck.

my 79 has a 318 with stock manifolds and duals with glasspacks sounds real good and no blue lights so far. The 73 has hedders, H-Pipe and turbos

Mine has an exhaust leak at the heat riser and despite the duals.....It sounds like crap.

Mine leaks too, But the guy who did my exhaust said that you could cut out the butterfly in the manifold, knock the shaft out and braze the holes.

I will be pulling the manifolds soon too as my exhaust is falling off.
Right now it is hanging and I probably could salvage it, but then it would sound crappy again.
I am going to see if either set of headers I have sitting in the garage will stuff up in there when I do this though.
I have a set of CPPA(TTI) 1 7/8" tube headers for a 440 A-body that I want to try and a set of headers for a 74 sattellite to try and see if they will clear the steering or the frame. I recall Chrysler Power had them on thier 2wd dually, but I also remember they notched the frame for fitment.
Having heard at least half of my exhoust somewhat uncorked, I am changing my tune to you going straight pipes if the local law will allow.
I was told that around here, I will at least need glass packs to keep from getting pulled over.

well i went ahead and decided i'd run 3" pipes from the collectors back... i'll put an h-pipe right after the headers, and then flowmaster 40s, and turndowns right after the mufflers and angle them out and towards the tires.

Mine exits out the right side from both just to keep clear of the gas tank.
I saw a Ford done up with the pipes all along the Pass-side with glass packs and exiting out both sides out back at the local exhaust shop. It was 2 1/2" pipe by the looks of it.
