I am doing my head gasket and timing belt. You need a three jaw puller to grab the inside of the balancer, not the outside, you will just seperate the pulley. You also need the insert that goes where the crankshaft bolt normally goes. This way the puller has a place to push from. I just used a long punch, but you have to be careful not to damage the threads inside. After you get that far, you might realize that to get it the whole way off, you will have to pull the engine. It doesnt say that in the book/alldata, but Im dealing with that now. Hope this helps.

No the engine does not have to be pulled, if you place a jack with a block of wood on it under the engine and take the passenger side motor mount off, the engine will swing down enought to get the balancer off. I just finshed a head gasket and timing belt on my 2.4L it's not to bad of a job.
