Hi,
New Here, Owner of a 1985 Dodge Power Ram
I was sent here (to this section) because my truck
is vintage I guess.
It says, Dodge Power Ram Custom 100 on the side.
I hear that is actually a D-100?
Yet even in this section of the forum it did not list the
D-100, instead it goes D-50, D-150, D-200 etc...
Skipping the D-100 on the intro discription page.
I also understand that D-100s are hard to fit for Radiators?
That is I had to messure mine and tell the Radiator company
what size to send.
But equally important, is this question. I ran the motor to
see why it over heats some times, ran it to get it warm and
see if I needed a head gasket.
I looked in the radiator and there was much corosion.
I put my hands on the radiator face and part of it was hot
and part of it cool. I am assuming that it is clogged in there
and not circulating well, so I ordered a new radiator.
Was I right to do this, and what else should I check?
Thanks
Chump

If you have a 2WD 1/2 ton then you have a D-150. If you have all that corrosion in the radiator than you probably have it throughout the entire cooling system and heater core. You need to do a complete coolant system flush and replace your thermostat. Are the hoses in good shape?
You did the correct thing with the radiator, they are really not that hard to fit, it's just that there were several sizes depending on the options on your truck.

Thanks Chump.
It is an automatic with four wheel drive and says,
"100 Custom Power Ram" on the side metalic emblem.
The heater works good, but if you can will you give
me a brief discription of what all is involved with the
flushing of the cooling system?
I mean is it only the things already mentioned?...
Heater core, Thermostat, & Radiator?...
...the rest being nothing but hoses?
Thanks,
I ordered some Dodge books from Amazon 2 days ago
but when they do arrive, I'm not sure they will detail
some of these proceedures.

two wheel drive half tons can be labeled D100s or D150s Chump..
but you have a W100...

D100 and W100 are almost identical.. except D-series pickups are 2WD, and W-series pickups are 4WD.
i dont think the radiator will be any different.

I'm the 1 who told him it was a D series. I did not ask if it was a 2WD or a 4x4.

I was referring to the VIN ID. There is no clasification for the 100 during this year. The labels could be either way. You should always order parts by the VIN classification and not the emblems.

Radiators are pretty much the same. An AW100 is a 4WD Ramcharger.

so someone must have rebadged it? I wasnt aware of the year the switched over from the 100 to 150.. my mistake..
you know it would be much easier if you had the VIN, and someone could run a VIN Check for ya.

It's no biggie! The strange thing is the VIN breakdown I have in the factory parts book does not list 100 but in the body parts area it lists both the 100 and 150 badge. Must have been the emissions stuff again or just trying to keep up with Ford when they changed their badge format.

Okay thanks everyone, you've all been great help.
...er? where's the vin on my Dodge? tee hee.
Also 75, where can I get some of those kleets?
And would a roof top visor be too corny?
If not where can I order one to fit mine?
Thanks.

Was looking in my 89 Chrysler manual, and the W100 is listed in the VIN code-
sixth position, #0= 100 series, #1=150 series. Mine is an 88 W100. The only real difference is the payload allowance : W100 - 2116 lbs
W150- 2146 lbs
Big difference, Eh!

mines located on the drivers door, on the side of it...
and the tiedowns im guessing is what you are asking about.. im not sure, they were already on my truck, and they've got ford logos on the back of them.. so im not sure where they came from.

To set the record straight. All D and W 100's and 150's will have the second digit of a 13 digit VIN (1970 through 1980) and the sixth digit of a 17 digit VIN (1981 through present) be the number one. What makes a 100 or a 150 is the GVW rating. THAT'S IT. I can't think on the top of my head if the GVW rating is reflected on your VIN. The fourth digit on both the 13 and 17 digit VIN denotes the GVW rating. And yes, the equipment levels will vary between the two.

Okay, my new radiator arrived today, went out and got a flush kit and a thermostat, will install the new readiator myself on Satuday. Never done this before. Any tips?

Drain all the old antifreeze out, pour the flushing solution in and fill it back up with water. Do this before you install the new radiator so you don't get it full of nasty crud. Then run it for the recommended time period. Then drain it all back out, and swap out the radiators.
Hook up the bottom hose, but leave the top unhooked on the radiator end. Remove the thermostat and put the t-stat housing back on, but don't put the new t-stat in yet. Don't worry about a gasket or sealant on the housing yet.
Now, take your water hose and fill the radiator up until it runs out the top hole. Now crank the engine up and it will pump the water through the engine and out the top hose, carrying all left-over crud and flushing solution out with it. Be sure point it away from the fan and downwards, so you don't get soaked. Use the hose to keep the radiator full and water pumping through the engine, until the water coming out the top hose is clear.
Now, install your new t-stat and housing gasket or sealant, hook up the top hose and fill'r up with a new 50/50 mix of antifreeze and you're good to go.

On the 100-150 monikers, I used to have an 84 D100 Custom, S6 auto short bed. The only difference I can figure is D100 is light duty 1/2-ton, and the D150 is the heavy duty 1/2-ton. 81-up D- or W-100's are actually kinda rare.

Okay I just did the flushing according to instructions,
but the garden hose to the "T" insert on the heater hose, seemed to spray out the seems and very little drained from the radiator drain, leading me to believe that it didn't work smoothly and it is extremely clogged somewhere and drastically needs more attention, but not sure where. Any suggestions before I proceed? Thanks.

From what I understand you are supposed to run the truck while putting water in the radiator fill hole(with garden hose) so it doesn't overheat, and then the engine will pump out the water and crud

Okay I followed your instructions to the Tee, took a while and was a mess but it all came out okay. I had to learn how to do this stuff sometime. saved some money for sure, spent $132 for the radiator and that was all, the rest was spare time.
Thanks again.

I followed instructions perfectly, radiator swap went well, thanks again.
I found a number on the body just under the hood # 916W082
But that doesn't make sense if I am looking for a 13 digit number.
I couldn't look in the drivers door tonight because it is parked
close to the wall in the garage, I'll move it later.
But see here,...

a post I probably put in the wrong thread.

yeah i guess i have a rare one too. its a 79 W100 on the vin. but the Badge said Power Wagon 150. but in my experience when i order all my parts i order them for a W150 and evrything has always fit just fine. So the W100's are rare? cool i guess...untill you try to restore it. good thing thats not what im doing with mine.
