now, every other power wagon and 2wd dodge truck that i have seen from 72-80.. all have the step rear bumper.. i have never seen one with the same rear bumper as i have, and i was talking to my dad about it, and he said it was like that when he bought it, it was 3 years old when he bought it...

anyways, the only explanation i can think of that it is possibly a sport bumper or something? i dont know, has anyone else ever seen one like it? help me!

I have chrome bumpers that aren't the step bumpers. I have a 1979 D150

99% sure they're original, and they're not quite the same. They are just one smooth curve, and don't have the ridge like in the middle of yours.

Your bumper is an aftermarket one and looks just about like mine on my 77. Are there any black non-slip adhesive backed treads on top? Back then when the trucks were ordered the rear bumper was an option. The step bumper from Dodge had diamondplate on top and I'm not sure it was chrome I think it was just silver paint. If you ordered the standard chrome bumper it would look almost like the stock front bumper. As the dealer told us, most people wanted to put their own bumper on and install a trailer hitch. This is why you see so many varieties of rear bumpers on our age trucks. On my Dad's 64 Ford F100 we had to take the original bumper off and put a step bumper on so that the trailer hitch would be more secure by bolting it to the frame and the bumper. I still have that original bumper in the basement. :)

so you think it was a option from the dealership?

hey impuresoul2k3, post up a picture of yours please!

my looks a lot like the front also, but i dont think its exactly the same, and it doesnt have any sort of black adhesive or anything on top, its all chrome.

Well the strip could be gone or never there. It's not stock, the dealer may have put it on but he got it from an aftermarket source. This was common back then.

ya, was wondering if anyone else had one also, and i wonder if that aftermarket source still exists, or has any left over?

Look on the bottom of the bumper or inside the bumper to see if it is stamped with the company ID. When I get a chance I will look at mine.

there isnt anything i can see that is stamped under there, but there is a lot of mud on the inside, maybe some day ill clean off the back, and see if there is something maybe.

I do see some for our vintage trucks but they have the diamonplate top...I think ours are smooth on top.

It looks the same eeven down to the 2 license plate lamps...the brand new ones online have the diamondplate top and close to the same contour as ours.

Try doing a search on google for "truck accessories" and you will get a bunch of places to look through. Here's one.

Starting in '72, a smooth bumper that matched the front was stock. Step bumpers were optional, but most everything I ever saw on a dealers lot had them, including my '73 when I bought it new.

I'd also like to find a straight, smooth bumper for mine.

In 74, 77, 79 they were optional on all 6 trucks I factory ordered. If the dealer had them on the lot with a bumper than it was specified on the order or not deleted. The rational for this was they were taken off anyway to install a better aftermarket bumper, the stock one was a showpiece only bumper and did not afford any place to bolt the last 2 bolts needed for the frame mounted trailer hitch.

Check out www.car-part.com for a used smooth rear bumper.

I worked at the Dodge Dealer when these were new. impuresoul2K3 does have the correct non step bumper. Also Chump was right on the style of the factory step bumper. And they were available in chrome or painted. With the exception of option packages, no truck back then had a rear bumper as standard.
