Hey guys, and girls,
I have a 1979 D150 that hesitates under heavy acceleration, sometimes it will back fire through the carb too. It has a brand new edlebrock carb (Sept '05), new plugs, faily new wires, dual exhaust(no cats, with glasspacks). My friend has a camaro that he can pretty much floor it and it takes off, no stalling or hesitation. Mine, from a stop, will either stall or bog down a lot until it starts running in the upper RPM range of first gear. If I floor it from a roll it will either downshift and kick some ass or it will backfire through carb/stall/start running again, and may repeat that process or eventually take off.

Any idea's on how to get this thing running right? :help:

Try advancing your initial timing a few degrees and report back.

Ok, I had my grandpa come down for X-Mas and he tried to see what the timing was on it, but we can't find the plate that you match with the notch in the pully, anyone know where that is supposed to be? Or is that even how you check the timing on a 318?

The timing marks are down on the left lower side of the timing cover. They are cast right into the cover and the balancer has a mark cut right into it. Should be right next to the power steering pump.

Ok, that helps, I had no idea where it'd even be. Still have to go buy some degreaser...

I'd also check the vacuum lines ... Here's what I'd recommend ... drive down to your nearest Auto parts store ...

PULL AND REPLACE - JUST ONE at a time - pull one off - take it to the parts counter, have them cut you a new one, go replace it and pull another one off .... its usually less than a dollar a foot, so for 5 - 10 bucks TOPS, you can replace ALL your vacuum lines
