Our 1999 Intrepid SE is stalling on us when we do highway driving. It will just start hesitating and then stalls. If we let it sit about 15 minutes it will start up again and be fine for a bit. We have taken it to the mechanics (3 times) and it has been noted as a general misfire, so we have changed a coil. This has not fixed the problem. It has recently done so again (the mechanic drove it home). Now it is not giving an error message so our mechanic thinks it could be the fuel pump (which is inside the gas tank). Has anyone else encountered this problem?

Sounds like starvation to me, I would hook up a fuel pressure guage that you can see while driving and see before you try going after the pump.

Starvation for sure, I'd change out the fuel filter, it's one of the cheaper ways to go before having to replace a pump. If the fuel pump isn't working, the vehicle shouldn't even start let alone stall out on the highway. I'm curious if the engine cuts off when you exceed a certain RPM. If so, then take moparman66 advice and get the fuel system pressure tested, as something is undoubtedly blocked.

from what I know it would definately be the crankshaft sensor that needs to be replaced. I am currently having the same problem and from what I have read on other sites this is very common in Intrepids

When it shuts down. look under car immediatly to see if exhaust pipe is getting red. cat converter could be going out. when it cools it will allow it to restrart.
