I keep reading about people putting 285/70/17 on stock rims...what is different with the stock 4x4 rims and the rims that come on the offroad package? I have a 03 QC 4x4 SLT with the aluminum rims and have a set of Goodyear MT/R 285/70/17 tires that are suppose to be mounted tomorrow....are they going to fit? I had a 99 Ram 4X4 before this one and had all kinds of room with 285/75/16 tires. I know that they will clear the fender wells without any problem...it's the upper A-arm that I am worried about. Does anybody have the stock aluminum 4X4 rims with this size tire on it. I do not have the offroad rims. is the backspacing different on the offroad rims? If they do not fit I am going to be pissed.

DuckMan,

You shouldn't have any trouble. Mine came with 275/70/17, the 285's will only be a little bigger.

Thanks Rusty,
I should find out this afternoon. My Stock 265's are close to the A arms in the back...so it made me a bit nervous when I discovered that. The truck should look so much better with some real size tires on it. Hey Rusty, I am assuming since your truck has 275's on it, that it came with the off road package? I still wonder if the off road package comes with wheels that have a different backspacing?

I don't really know what the deal is with the different tire sizes. I do know that the tires mine came with have been discontinued by Good Year. Maybe that's why they switched to the 265's? No off-road package on mine, just the standard chrome wheels.

Looking forward to hearing about your results. I'm planning on going to 285's on mine when the time comes too!

Thanks for the info and the picture. Great looking truck!! My previous Dodge was a black 99 RC 4X4 (see Gallery). Black is the best looking color in the world, and it was real hard for me not to get black again, but I use my truck offroad and it was so hard to keep clean. I chose the graphite grey this time and hope it will be easier to deal with. After I get the tires put on the truck and get it cleaned up this weekend, I will take some pictures and post them on Monday.

Looking forward to seeing the pics! I like the black when it's clean, but the cold temps this winter have kept me from washing it much.:( I live on a gravel road too, just can't win sometimes! LOL I broke down last night and washed it, about 30 degrees, 10 when I got up this morning. Frozen locks. Luckily, the passenger side was ok.

I think the graphite grey is a sharp color, and it was one of my choices when I bought this one. After a lot of searching, my sales guy found this one. It's the exact truck I wanted (option wise) so I went with it.

I see what you mean about that A-arm. I just noticed at lunch how close that is. The 285's should only be 10mm wider, but I don't know how much bigger we could go without more back spacing.

My Sport came with 265/70R17. That's cool with me cause the door jam mentioned that the truck was slated to be delivered with 245/70R17 tires... how lame would that have been!

I bought a cheapy dakota in 97, came with P215/65R15..... oh yeah,,,, that was terrible!

My buddies '02 17" wheels (not chrome) have the same back spacing stamped on the back as my Off Road wheels, and I'm running 315/70R17 BFG. It is close to the A arm, but I haven't had any problems.

Cool! Any pictures? I noticed on tirerack that the 315's were a lot cheaper than the 285's... How far off is your speedometer?

I have some pictures a buddy took with his digital camera/and flash, but he hasn't sent them to me yet. I would say it is within a half inch. I have the 3.92 gears in mine and it originally came with 20" wheels/and tires that were 33" tall, so mine is only about 2 mph high at 60 mph. Ok, I got the new tires....they look and ride great. I have ran several different brand of Mud Tires over the years and the Goodyear MT/R's are very well behaved on the road and killer off the road. The 285's fit good on the stock rims and the clearance is fine. I cleaned the truck today and put on it's first coat of wax, and by the time I finished it was dark, so I will take some more tomorrow in the daylight. I don't think that my speedo is that much off, I will check it with my GPS later this week and let everyone know.

That looks very nice. Did you change rims, though? I haven't seen an Off Road without the package wheels.

No those are the rims that came on the truck. When the dealer was doing a search to find the truck that I wanted he could not find one exactly like I wanted. The closest that I he could find was everything that I wanted except the offroad package. So he said that he would put the offroad package on it for me. I liked the wheels that were on it, so I told him that all I wanted was the stickers and skidplates. I usually replace the stock shocks within a year or so anyway and I don't need the tow hooks in the front because my brushguard will have them. I have a Warn winch off of my 99 dodge that I am going to put on it as soon as the winch mount/brush guard is available from Warn, which is suppose to only be a couple more weeks. The dealer would have added every component that comes with the offroad package and charge the offroad sticker price, but I did not really care for all that comes with the package. The main thing that I wanted it for was the skidplates and the stickers look nice too. So he ended up getting me those items at cost, about $150.

Here are the pics of my 315's and the A arms. Close, but still room left and no problems.
