I don't think that 1/4 mile time for the old Charger
is correct. I can do 14.5 to 14.7's in my truck
but a 70 Charger R/T would kill my truck badly.
I think they did more like 13.8 to a 14 flat in the
1/4 mile. At least the buddy of mine's would. I
think he was at 100 mph for the 1/4 as well.

Car Life Road Test placed the Charger R/T 440 at 14.71 @ 96.67 0-60 @ 7.2

tires probably played a major factor back then.

Popular Hot Rodding mag. did a cover with the New Charger vs. New Mustang! It was to do a replay of the Steve McQueen movie BULLITT! Compared the OLD school vs the NEW School!

If memory serves. The '70 440 Charger came from the factory with 3.23 gears standard, So did the Hemi Roadrunner (I had a '68). Tires were a major factor then. My friends 70 Charger 440 ran 9.50 x 15 Dragway Specials w/ 3.23 gears and was hard pressed to break 14.5 sec 98mph quarter mile runs. That was basically stock with welded on "cutoffs" open and a little playing around with timing and plugs. I think our chargers have more potential once the hackers get going IMHO.

Not to mention a 5 spd tranny vs a 3 spd like the old auto's. The gearing is much better now.

Not to mention that the 440 was rated at gross horsepower, and the 5.7 is net.
