I have a 78 Dodge with a inline 6 but no tranny. I've tried a 727 but the starter seems to be about 2-3 inches too high. Same bolt pattern/engine mounts as a 318. The slant 6's that I've checked out at the junkyard have the starter is'nt in the right spot. The starter is bolted to the motor. ???

You tried an A727 from a 318? Is that correct?
Slant sixes utilize their "own" A727 (or A904)...the starter doesn't bolt to the engine, it's on the bellhousing, but it mounts high.

Probably has a D150 with the rare Mitsubishi built 4.0L I6 diesel. I don't think this engine was an option for very many years.

I thought it might be the Perkins Diesel that was in the "TOP HAND" D-150. But when I reread the post,,, he said 1978, the Perkins was in the 1976 series! And it had the 4 speed manual in it. The Perkins didn't have enough power to pull itself out of a wet paper bag!

The MMC 6 cyl. diesel came with a 727 trans. Now, the V-8 trans bell housing won't fit that vehicle so you're going to have a tough time finding one with the correct bell housing. I looked up the OEM case number but it is discontinued from MOPAR. Good luck.

Sounds like it's time to drop a V8 in unless you're really attached to that diesel.

Are you laughing about the WET PAPER BAG??? Perkins only had 156hp, not turbo'd. I've seen some early diesel engine installs, 4-53 Detriot Diesel , 3208 Cat's, mostly homemade set ups. Most of these have been at The Mid American Truck Show in Louisville,Ky. I get tickets to go from my trucking friends!

If the motor mounts will allow you to hook up a 318 or 360, I'd go for it.
I have only seen one of those trucks over the years. They are rare beasts.
I understand they really suck in cold climates as far as getting them started.
