HI,
I have a 2000 2.7 L V6 Dodge Intrepid. I go for regular service and checkups. It has currently 81000 miles on it. Yesterday at a triffic light, car suddenly stopped and the odometer reading would not increase, transmission light came up and the speedometer does not change either.
The car seems to go on only one gear and seems to hurt the engine with a roar sign if we try to go more than 35 m/hr(Guess since speedometer does not work).

I have seen few issues of similar nature in the forums and request for help. When I went to one dealer, he says the gear ratios on the transmission are messed up and it would cost $1800. I cannot beleive it. He says it is better to replace with transmission of another car than fixing it.

Pleaaaase Help

Go under the drivers side, remove front wheel, and romove the input and out put sensors. The out put has a magnet and send to the speedo, probably had metal chunks on it. New tranny. Happened to me, I just cleaned it and no problems yet. Will get new tranny when this one explodes!!

Or it's just the sensors, they seem to go out, same sensors as moparman66 is talking about. Puts the car into limp mode. Means it stays in second gear and the speedometer doesn't work. Change the sensors out, more than likely it will fix the problem.

Exactly what the other reply said...it is likely one of the transmission sensors...input or output. Likely not the entire transmission. Your car should be displaying some diag codes....try this to retrieve the codes:

Start with the door open and the key in the ignition.
1. Turn the key to the 'ON' position.
2. Turn the key to the 'OFF' or 'LOCK' position.
3. Turn the key to the 'ON' position.
4. Turn the key to the 'OFF' or 'LOCK' position.
5. Turn the key to the 'ON' position and leave it there.

Note the Odometer will read ------- to begin with, then will begin echoing the codes. If there are no codes, it will echo 'done'.

Can check what the codes mean here:

If the speedo doesn't work at all.. Then it sounds like a bad speed sensor..

On the driver side of the transmission are 2 sensors in the side of the housing. Input and Output, Output being towards the rear of the car. I'd change that one as its fairly cheap.

The same thing happened to our Intrepid and it was a speed sensor. We were worried it was the transmission as well as it would not go out of 1st gear.
