i'm dropping a built 360 in my truck for a while until i get my original engine rebuilt. it's coming out of a automatic truck, so i need to change flywheels. will the manual-trans flywheel off my 318 work or does the 360 use a different flywheel? i know the 360's are balanced differently, but i can't remember about the flywheels.

hey speeddragon
you have to use the flywheel from a 360 not a 318 there is a differents.
the 360 flywheels are balanced for the 360 only and a 318 flywheel can go on a 273,318,340 hope this help you oh ya I found out the hard way and it tore the crank out of my motor (ouch)

I was told once that the converter also had to be changed. Is this true?

ouch is right, warlock. tore the crank out?! holy cow! thanks for the info. i actually found out wednesday by looking where i should to start with, in the hollander interchange manual. felt kinda stupid too, cause i looked it up & was like, "well duh, i knew that.". by the way, for anybody whose interested, the big blocks use the same flywheel as the 318. only the 360 is different.
in answer to your question, 77 stepside, the converter does have to be changed. all this flywheel stuff became moot point yesterday, cause i found out a 4-speed won't fit a 3-speed bellhousing. oops. so i'm just going auto for a while. ain't that the way it goes, " well, this won't fit, screw it, let's stick this in and try it.". oh well, wish me luck.

hey got the 360 in & running. man, that sucker's wicked! i got this engine out of a 3/4 ton p/u i bought for 200$. the guy i got it from was like," i don't know what cam's in it, but it's a big one.". well the way it sounds it's at least a 284 purple shaft.
