Last month our check engine light came on and the car started running sluggish. I had it towed to the dealership the next day and they said it ran a P0340 Cam Sensor code. For them it didn't repeat the error and the sensor was fine. They reset the computer and told me to watch it. Well yesterday the car didn't want to start at first then the check engine light came back on and when I gased it to about 30 mph it was sluggish again. So I let it rest till today and this morning it started fine and ran fine but the check engine light is still on. I plan on taking it to the dealership again but my question is what does the Cam Sensor moniter and is this something that should be worriesome? My concern is that they will get it and test the sensor again and say its fine and it isn't repeating the error and send me home. I have read in the past where some have cleaned the connections to sensors and that helped; should I ask the dealership to clean the area and see what happens? I love this car even though it came with a butt load of miles (it was a rental car and I got a extended warrenty) and I want to make sure I have it for a long time! :help:

This is a very very very common issue with these cars. These sensors are known to go bad and once you start having problems the sensor needs to be replaced...not reset. Especially since you are under warranty simply do not settle for less than a replacement sensor. It is a very easy/cheap replacement.

Thank you for letting me know! I will let my dodge dealership know that it is still giving me problems and hopefully get it totally replaced.

I too am getting this code and having the same symtoms. My car isn't under warranty so can the Cam Sendor be purchased and installed fairly easily? Please advise if you can. Thanks!!!

My 2004 Intrepid (SXT, 3.5L) had the same problem, and it turned out to be the cam sensor, which they replaced. Not sure what error code the computer generated. Lucky for me it was still under warranty. :)
When I was able to get it to the dealer, the check engine light had gone out and the car appeared to be running fine. I thought to myself "Great, they won't find a #&*! thing wrong with it". Turns out they did. They explained that the car's computer will hold the error codes even if the check engine light goes out.

I know you can purrchase the CAM Sensor from a dealership, not sure about after market though. It is usually located on the front of the engine up top. Shouldn't really be all that difficult to replace. Just make sure you do the right sensor. I believe the Intrepid has 2 CAM type sensors on it.
I used to have a 97 Interpid 2.7L and it had gone bad twice on that one. One in warranty, one out of.
