I'm thinking about putting a K&N performance air filter into my intrepid. Before I do, I have some questions. First, these things increase performance by allowing more air into the engine, won't that also mean more dust/dirt/contaminants? Second, in terms of how often to replace it, I've heard several mechanics say that the air filter really doesn't start working until it gets dirty, then it filters the air much better. Is there any truth to this, because it sounds odd.

Yes...performance filters generally allow more contaminants. I am not sure about the dirty filter theory...sounds a little like nonsense to me. With K&N filters you do not need to replace them...simply need to buy a recharge kit and clean them. I think it is like every 20K miles but I am not 100%...I know it says on the instructions for the filter.

Its more like every 100,000 miles and no, oil filters are actually better than the paper ones as far as catching dirt. I have one on mine and love it, I do clean it every six months jsut for the hell of it, cant hurt it. I also gut out the bottom of the stock air box for more flow, seems to work even better. Make sure you take the air baffle out of the air tube too, it looks like a cone if u look into the air tube. Let me know if you need help on that!
