I have a cold leak on the right side of the engine compartment right around the water pump that appears to be reddish brown. I thought at first that it may be power steering fluid, but I can't tell. It is impossible to see where the leak is actually coming from due to the location behind the serpentine mess they designed in that engine compartment. I am almost thinking that I may be kissed by the dodge curse again with a head gasket leak. I haven't seen the normal signs in the oil, but all other signs are there. Looking at the fluid you would almost say it was transmission fluid, but it does not look like it is the right area. Any ideas?

You could try the taste test. Antifreeze has a sweet taste. Just touch to end of finger and then to tongue. It won't kill you. You would have to drink it. Then at least you would know what you are dealing with.

F that. don't taste it. If it's reddish brown, it's probably transmission fluid. Take a white paper towel, soak it in, and take it to a local garage that might have a better idea.

It's not likely to be tranny fluid if it's on the right side, since the transmission and all the works for it is on the left. It's probably antifreeze, probably coming from the water pump, and the fact that it's reddish brown tells you all you need to know about why it failed. You need to flush these things every year or two so that your antifreeze maintains its lubricating qualities. And the main thing that antifreeze needs to lubricate is -- ta-da -- your water pump. You're in luck. The part is cheap, $29, and you can do it yourself if you're so inclined. See my reply to ZZ8 in another thread here today for the procedures.

Good luck.

Geez, I thought the taste test was more common. I guess maybe here in Canada, where the men are men, we know what oil, and antifreeze taste like. Just kidding. I've got nothing against Americans. I have a bunch of american relatives, so!!!!
