I have searched for existing threads on this issue but didn't see what I think solved my problem. So, here goes with mine.

I have a 2003 Intrepid w/40K miles. I know that if I don't turn the gas tap till it clicks after I fill up, the engine light will eventually light. I tighten the cap and after a couple of days the light goes away.

Recently, the engine has been shutting down when the engine light goes on. Very dangerous as it can happen while driving on interstate. (I think I pay attention to turning the cap till it clicks on fill-ups.)

I see some have suggested that the gas cap could be the problem. Others talk about "P" codes and working from there.

Are my symptoms characteristic of a common problem? Thanks for any help given!

What you need to do is retrieve the diagnostic codes...anytime you get a check engine light you will also get some codes.

To check codes you need to turn off the car and then cycle the ignition key three times...turn it all the way until right before you are going to start the engine and then turn it back...do this three times and then the third time leave it on and the codes should be displayed on your dash. The codes should give you a good idea of the problem. My bet is you will get the code...P0340...which is the cam position sensor...very common failure and relatively easy and cheap to replace.

Autozone did the diag and found P0344. I bought the camshaft sensor and it turned out to cure the problem!!

Thanks.
