here's the scenario: cruise control set at 70mph, decending a long hill (8%), rpms reach about 1500, tranny makes some wierd shift, kicks rpms up to 3000. get to the bottom of the hill on flat ground tranny shifts to 2000 rpms, give or take to maintain the 70mph. what the hell is that shift to 3000? anybody had the same thing happen. :

Yes, the cruise will actually work to slow the car down on a decline if it wants to accelerate above the set point by more than about 5mph. First it will lock up the torque converter for more engine braking. If that's still not enough it will downshift a gear to help slow the car down. Once it's back in "range" of the CC setting it will shift back to OD.
Happens to me a lot on the hills in PA, and I think it's great because the state cops love to watch those hills for exactly that reason. You can really just set the cruise and forget it with this car.

I just came back from a trip to the Outer Banks, and had the same thing occur. When the RPM's jumped, I said what the hell was that? Then as the car leveled out, back to normal.
I have had cruise control on my cars for the past 25 years, and have never had one downshift to slow the car. I am not complaining, but it struck me as weird!

Just don't use CC on hills if you want to avoid this kind of shifting.

See theres an answer to everything :) :)
