I have a 1991 Dodge Grand Caravan, front wheel drive, 3.3. It does not have an EGR valve. I do not know if the previous owners took it out or that model did not come with one. (California) I looked in the Chilton repair manual and under the emission controls section, "1991 Federal, California and Canadian 3.3L vacuum hose routing - front wheel drive" diagram there is no EGR!? The 1991 2.5L, Federal and Canadian, 1991 Federal, California, and Canadian 3.0L don't have an EGR either. But the 1991 California 2.5L diagram does have one. Am I reading these diagrams correctly? Am I not supposed to have an EGR? Both PepBoys and Autozone are able to find the part when I give them my model information. This call came about because I failed the smog check because of high NOx. Two years ago I just squeaked by. In researching possible reasons, I found out that that is the function of the EGR valve. I looked inside and I don't see any hanging vacuum hose where it would have been connected (although that could have been taken out at the source which I don't know where) and I don't see a dangling electric plug either.

What else can I do to lower my NOx. I may have made things worse by changing the spark plugs and wires which might make the temperature hotter! I changed the air and gas filters...all before I found out the mechanism of NOx production and heat.

Hi, my 1995 Voyagers EGR valve is located just behind the throttle body, on the very first part of the intake plenum, where it curves around. It is located on the bottom and has a steel tube that goes to the rear exhaust manifold. Maybe this is why u can't see any wires or hoses hanging.

thanks for the help. I found the picture in the Haynes repair book and I just don't have the valve. The bolt hole is there but no other connectors are nearby. Also, the diagrams for the vacuum schematics do not include the valve. Unless in this particular year it was not vacuum controlled? I still have to use a mirror to see where the actual valve is supposed to sit on the block itself. Also, there is no tube from the exhaust to connect to the valve. Everything was either removed completely, or it never came with one and that is what I am trying to verify. I called Dodge directly but wouldn't you know it, their service manuals only go back to 1992.

thanks for all the help! I changed the plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter. I changed the thermostat to 180 degrees. I drained about 1 quart of the radiator fluid and replaced it with water and added a wetting agent. And I PASSED the smog check. The HC and CO readings were vertually unchanged from my first fail, but the 25 mph NOx were reduced by 25%!. Unfortunately, the 15 mph did not change at all and it just squeaked by to pass. I don't think I will be able to pass in 2 years with those numbers. How can I reduce the 15 mph NOx emissions?
