I joined this list trying to help a buddy out who wants to tow with his 77 1-ton van conversion. He bought the van used, and it doesn't have the owner's manual.

The van's got a strong 360 V8, auto trans, big air bags in the back, and a class V receiver; so I'm guessing it has hauled some reasonably sized trailers in the past.

Does anyone have information available on this van's gross combined weight rating? We have already found the GAWR for the two axles (approx. 3k fr/ 4k rear) that is stamped on the data plate. We intend to weigh the van conversion to help determine the max trailer load it can safely carry.

Also, I'd like to know what axle is under the rear of this van; and what the weight capacity is for the rear axle assembly (which may be higher than the GAWR).

Any help from the list is appreciated!

Thanks,

Steve

Steve,

The GVWR for the van and the GAWR for both the front and rear axles should be stamped on the ID plate. The GVWR for a B300 can range from 6400-8200 pounds depending on what axles, wheels, and tires the van is equipped with. There should also be an Equipment ID Plate on the inner surface of the hood. This ID plate should tell you what transmission, axles, brake, etc. the van is equipped with. A B300 of that era probably has either a Spicer 60 or Spicer 70 rear axle.

Unfortunately the factory service manual doesn't give specifics about max. trailer towing capacity. If your friend needs an owner's manual, I would suggest he look on Ebay.

Steve, your buddy can get an owner's manual for his 77 van from www.books4cars.com

They have a whole box full of them in perfect condition (I've seen them in person). They charge $25 each for them.
