Have a 97 Dodge Caravan, 3.0L POS, drips oil in the driveway...

Lately, somtimes, while driving around and you stop at a lite or just stop and idle the "Oil" idiot lite comes on on the dash... if you just hit the gas it goes out.. This happens infrequently, usualy only if the wife is driving it, but I have seen it a couple times..

Was at the dealer for something else, on the dak, and asked the service writer.. he said check the oil pressure sending unit for leaks or lose wire...

Tried to find it but it eludes me....

Does anyone know where it is located on the 97 3.0 L engine ?

It is on the left side of the engine in the same adapter the oil filter spins on to.
If this only happens when at hot idle I would suggest you are more likely to have oil pressure problems than sending unit problems.
You should have the oil pressure checked with a mechanical gauge when the engine is HOT.
You may need a new pump to cure the problem or could try using a heavier engine oil as well.

My 2¢:)

thx for the 2 cents...

it also leaks/drips, like an old harley, i don't have a lot of faith that the sending unit is the problem, but the service writer at the dodge dealer suggested i check it, so i will..

this caravan has been a pos from day 1 so i suspect that is worse than a leak or loose something.. every trip to the dealer cost more than expected usually for something else not related to the original problem...

i think i'll try a 40wt oil, and trade it ...

Good info on the sending unit. I have a similar problem and would like to replace the sending unit as it is a low cost item (about $13). I have the 3.0L engine '98 caravan.

How does one remove the connector? I do not want to break it. It is not an obvious removal item for me.

Thanks.

i have a 91 with a 3.0L i fixed oil leaks in it .boy oh boy that thing leaked oil like a detroit diesel . anyway, the adaptor that the distributor fits into there is a gasket in there that was leaking. that leak was very tuff to find. it leaked behind the timing belt cover, and run all over the place. the valve cover seals hardend and leaked, the oil filter adaptor leaked, and the oil pan gasket leaked. this all started right around the 200,000 mile mark. now it doesn't use hardly any oil in 3,000 miles. i do have to add i sure am impressed how this engine starts in this cold weather i have had no trouble startin it up in double digit below zero weather.
