Hi all!!!!!
My 96 neon sohc atx just quit running as I pulled in the driveway today. I got codes 37 & 21. I just replaced both the tranny and the 2nd O2 sensor last week! The tranny has been slipping at times. I assumed it was because my shift cable needed replaced(which it does). Help!!! What Have I Done!!!!!

Does the motor run at all?

i have waited a few hours and it starts and runs like it did before it f---ed up. When it went plooey....it acted as if it were out of gas or the timing was off. I checked the timing belt and its fine. Do these have electric overdrives on them and is it possible the wire(s) became loose or broken? It sure seems to shift better when the shift indicator says its in low 2. Also...the tranny and engine were pretty hot.

Torque converter lockup isn't working, which would explain the overheating tranny.

I'd take it (gingerly) to Autozone or some other place that can read the 4-digit codes for free. There are a lot of O2 sensor problems that can cause the code 21, and that would help narrow it down some. There are a few problems that will cause the code 37, and the only one I'd rule out right now is the P/N position switch failure (since the car starts).

Best of luck!

Thanx radar for the info. I will try that. Took it to work 2day and the same thing happened. It didnt make it to the driveway this time. I sat on the side of the road for about 15min. and it started. Got me home. Always something.

does anyone know why the converter wouldnt be working now. Is this coincidence or me????

There's a solenoid that is supposed to lock up the converter at some point. That's what puts it in "overdrive" more or less. If the TC doesn't lock up, you've got slippage still. Slip at high speeds means high heat... Could just be the solenoid connector isn't hooked up, could be a bad solenoid, dunno.

Youre the best Radar....I took it to autozone and got the codes. I dont have the numbers however since I foolishly set the paper down in a "safe" place and quickly had them rendered useless by some wayward tranny fluid. The tc is not locking and the 2nd O2 sensor is not reading. The 3 wire plug (orange, black, and orange and white) on the rear of my tranny did get pinched during the removal. Is this the wire or wires for the tc solenoid? Could the tranny problem be causing the 02 problem. Is the solenoid where these 3 wires go to??? Thanx for any and all info

I don't have my wiring diagrams with me, but I'd definitely look into splicing that wiring. On the '96-up Neons, they did start using the downstream O2 sensor for the long-term fuel trim calculation. I doubt that the two are related, unless the O2 sensor and TC solenoid share a ground for some odd reason...
