well, there is no such thing as a "free mod" hehe. even if you get the part "free" expect to have to spend money on something. things get old, brittle, and break. Aside from that... The only thing really limiting you is the depth of your pocket.
CAI (cold air intake), Header, hotter plug wires (crane firewires are good, or msd 8.5's), underdrive crank pulley, bigger throttle body (55mm is good on a mtx neon) are good basic upgrades that will add power/put more to the ground. Prothane motor mount inserts and a mopar performance rear bobble strut will help power get to the ground as well.
I have a '97 sport with the DOHC and a 5 speed and i'm going with basic bolt ons for power... nothing too serious. should put 160-165 horse to the ground when i'm done (195-210 at the flywheel). I might port my intake, i havent decided yet. Whatever you do though dont neglect you your drivetrain. more power is great and all but you'll go through trannies, clutches and CV's like socks if you get too serious with your engine without upgrading your drivetrain. if you get into nitrous, ported heads, cams, turbos or the like, i would strongly recommend a racing clutch of somekind, stronger CV shafts and a LSD (limited slip differential) if you plan to make good use of your upgrades. hehe. I have installed a sachs racing clutch and am keeping in mind that i will probably be buying another transaxel in a few years (trannies notorious for extremely weak differentials). (and remember I'm just adding bolt ons). It all depends on what you wanna do with it (race, drag, autocross, just spirited driving, whatever). Talk to RADARLOVE, well, there is no such thing as a "free mod" hehe. even if you get the part "free" expect to have to spend money on something. things get old, brittle, and break. Talk to RADARLOVE, he knows a lot about neons. he could give you good advice on just about anything you want to do to your car. he's been a big help to me. Good luck.
