Just serviced tranny (auto-box on '97 2500). Adjusted bands per haynes (72 in-lbs and back off 2 7/8 turns for front and 2 turns for rear). Shifts worse than before. Noticed rear band was much looser than 2 turns when performing adjustment.

Is the spec I used wrong???

What exactly is it doing?
I know I used to just tighten the band by hand with a socket only(no ratchet) and then back it off about 1.5 turns. It should be a little loose but not too loose. It also can't be too tight either..

for a 46re tranny thats correct!!
42re front= 3 5/8 turns rear= 4 turns
44re ........ 2 1/4 ....... ....... 4 .......
46re ........ 2 7/8 ....... ....... 2 .......
47re ........ 1 7/8 ....... ....... 3 .......
according to mitchell on demand 42,44,and 47re are pickup truck applications.

DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN THE FRONT BAND! Major damage will result! The Front band MUST let go before the front clutch applies or you WILL have a big bang and a VERY bad day!

Here's the best guide I have found for adjusting the bands.
