Won't it fit the 2004 as it is 8 1/4" rear also? Or is there some difference to prevent its use in our rear diff's?

What is a Sure-Grip Differential Assembly? Is it a locker?
Where did you find this unit. Web link?

Sure Grip is Dodge's name for a LSD like GM's Posi or Ford's Trac-Loc. It is a Limited slip unit not a locker.
Looks like eariler(96down) units had 27 spline axles and newer (96up)ones have 29 spline. Try Randy's Ring and Pinion (http://www.randysringandpinion.com/content/products/default.asp?vid=2&pid=3). Look through the site has lots of info on rears and gears.

If you are looking for a locker or an lsd, there are many good choices for the 8.25 axle. There are numerous threads on this topic, but auburn makes a common lsd for the 8.25" diff adn Powertrax makes a very good locker for the 8.25" diff.
