:rck: I was wondering if there is a way to convert drum brakes to a disc brakes on a 2000 Dodge Neon? Is it safe?

it can be done but its really not worth it unless your at the track every weekend. Your drums will work just fine for stopping you, its a light car. better pads up front and stickier tires will be your best bet to reduce your stopping distance.

If you're really bent on rear discs though you'd have to rob them off a SRT-4 (or an R/T if they have them) and then your rears are going to be rather large (being off an SRT) so you'd want to get bigger fronts too. Not to mention youd have to change your e-brake to work with rear discs as well. Its more work than its worth, I wouldnt advise it. Like i said before, the car is light. A good set of front pads, maybe some cross drilled rotors, and some good sticky rubber will stop you PLENTY fast. Best of luck with whatever you decide though.

Just get some rear disks from the LE model.
You do not have to get srt 4 brakes or rt ones.
I have a 2001 chrysler neon se with rear drums. All I have to do is get an LE models rear disks, hubs, caliper & handbrake cable. All u need then is a spare saturday arvo to unbolt the drums and bolt on the disks!! Simple and easy convert.
Definately NOT as hard as the last reply states at all.
Good luck doing it. I think it looks alot better and the stopping distance is definately better with 4 wheel disks!

Avoid the cross & drilled rotors too. For street use the standard solid disks are best
Cross & drilled rotors are best for racing, they are way too hard on the disk pads for daily driving. You will chew thru the pads way fast.
The cross & drilled rotors also tend to crack easily under excessive heat from braking.
If you have to get new disks get the crossed ones as the drilled ones crack from the outer drill hole to the disk perimeter.

I have a 01 Dodge Neon ES and it has 4 wheel disk brakes right from the factory.

The rear discs are the same on all Neons (except SRT-4). The only true advantages I can see over rear drums are ease of maintenance and availability of good pads... Like mentioned, the rears only do about 20% of the braking. We're talking single digit foot improvements on your 100-0 time, and when was the last time you checked that? The rear disc setup is also heavier, and it's unsprung weight, which is 3-4 times worse from a handling perspective. I plan on doing it, but only for the 2 reasons mentioned above. Main reason for putting it off is I'd have to buy new wheels ('95 4-lugger...). The Porsche racing team takes off the factory slotted/cross-drilled rotors and installs solid rotors, if that tells you anything...
