A few days ago I have noticed that my car will idle at around 1,200-1,300 rpms when I start the car up. It only did that when it was real cold outside but its 90 in Tx. so I dont think thats the case. After about 5 mins, sometimes less, it will idle around 800 rpms where it should be. Even after driving and I put it in park, all of a sudden it will idle high again. Any ideas???? Im trying to get a new car but I need to know whats up with my intrepid......... :help:

What engine is in the car? Have you run the fault codes?

High idle can be a result of either an air leak in the induction system behind the throttle or in the case of a multiport injected vehicle it could also be the A.I.S. motor. I would start there and have that checked.

well i can check the air leak right, jsut look for a loose hose. How much is a IAS motor cost?? and where is it located???

Well hoses might be the leak, however dont rule out gaskets either. The AIS motor is usually on the throttle body. I would strongly recomend getting a Haynes Manual. This is a great guide for most do it yourselfers. You can price out an AIS motor at your local parts house, but they are ususally under $100. But before you buy have your old one tested. If your throttle body is dirty clean it. Do and check everything you can before spending your money. Good luck!

It is also called Idle Control Motor. Basically a sensor plunger. I had the same problem and cleaning the throttle body helped. Standing in front of the engine, middle top. Should be one plug to a sensor on top of the engine. That is it. Getting a Haynes maual will be of good use as well.

Ive been trying to troubleshoot thesameproblem in a 3.5 , to eliminate the idle air control motor, you can pull the hose off that goes to it from the plastic air intake, its located next to the drivers side throttle body. Pull the hose off and block the hole leading into the Idle air control motor, if the idle doesn't lower then it isn't the culprit. Good Luck

Intake gaskets are a known problem in 3.5 engines...................
