I have a 1998 Dodge Neon and my check engine light stays on. We took it to Auto Zone and they hooked it up to the machine and the man told him that the only thing that came up was code P1390. Can anyone tell me what that means?

1390Cam and crank signals don't match - did the timing belt skip a tooth?

i am not sure but i will have it looked at. Could that cause my check engine light to come on and not allow me to get it inspected?

it would cause your light to come on for sure

The '98 FSM actually says it is "Timing belt skipped a tooth". This is not something you want to ignore. Skipping a tooth typically means that either the belt is worn, the tensioner assembly is worn, the water pump is failing, or one of the idler pulley bearings (if so equipped) is worn. If it goes completely, you'll have 16 bent valves in addition to the host of other codes that pop up. If it's been 90k+ miles since your last timing belt change, you're due...

Having a shop replace the timing belt, tensioner, and water pump (the absolute minimum I'd replace) will run in the $500 range at least. If you have a spare weekend and decent hand tools, you can do it yourself for under $200. There's a really nice how-to (for SOHC, DOHC isn't much different) at www.boogerracing.com.

Best of luck!
