Hey everybody! I just purchased a '66 A-100 window van yesterday. A little rough as could be expected.

she moves pretty good, but dosen't stop so well. I saw the thread about the disc brake conversion. Is it worth it without also converting to power brakes? was this ever an option? any ideas? It has it's quirks as well. I am sure I will be posting later about how to manually turn the heater on..........

I have had a 66 Ford Grumman Step Van, and a 68 Ford Vanette step van, a 66 ford F-100..... and now DODGE, I had a 2004 Dodge b250 Cargo, but it was just too new for me. so here we go!

One of the first things you ought to do is trash that single circuit master cylinder and upgrade to a dual circuit master cylinder....you'd need to do that anyway if you wanted disc brakes. There is a company called AAJ Brakes that makes disc brake for the A-100 (www.aajbrakes.com). You won't see a listing on the website, but you can contact the guy directly. Power brakes were never a factory option, but some camper conversions had power brakes added by the conversion company. The power brake units aren't the traditional vacuum booster type, but a hydro-vac type unit mounted on the frame. My Xplorer had power brakes, but they were so touchy I went back to manual brakes.

What size brakes are you running? A-100's had 10" brakes on all four corners with 11" front brakes being an option on higher GVW models.

what exactly am i measuring to get the 10" or 11" measurement? I have never done any brake work before (lines and such). so the dual master cylinder would give me a circuit for the front and a seperate for the back? for safetys sake?

thanks,

josh

Just take a tape measure and measure the inside diameter of the brake drum. Sometimes the drum will have the diameter cast into it.

Yes for safety's sake...absolutely.
