I need some help! I have a 96 Caravan with the 3.0 engine, 3 sp auto trans. Trying to make a long story short...here goes. About 1 month ago I took the van into the shop to have the tires balanced, I had a slight shimmy in the front end. They ended up replacing the cv axles. The axle seals leaked and I drove the car low on trans fluid. Trans slipped and that is how I caught the problem. The shop fixed the seals. I still had shimmy problems and they ended up having to again replace the cv axles.

Since the first set of axles, the van has not driven the same. I had a crankshaft position sensor fail. Not sure if related to the axle replacement. The car stalled and downshifted roughly and stored a code indicating the crankshaft position sensor.

That has been fixed, but I am still having problems with the van. Sometimes it runs smooth as silk other times it skips at about 55 or so. You can feel a skip as the air conditioner compressor cycles. It will also feel like it has no power. The best way I can describe, it feels like the car is out of breath.

The van can go from running great to skipping to the sluggish performance and back to smooth. It also seems to behave worse the hotter it is outside.

I have put in new plugs&wires & rotor and distributor cap. I have had the throttle body and IAC motor cleaned. I have had the fuel filter changed. I just changed the TPS and so far nothing has helped.

I am at my wits end. Should i check the catylitic convertor? Could it cause the wild changes in engine performance? Is there a chance that my transmission is damaged? What else should I check?

Any help anyone can give me is greatly appreciated.
