I recently took off my Banks muffler and stuck a 4" straight pipe on, just for kicks really. I was just wondering if there is any problems this can cause, other than legal problems. Will it do anything harmful to the truck?

BEST SOUND IN THE WORLD!! LOVE IT. All us farmers run straight pipes here in the south. More power, Better fuel milage, and I have right at 100000 on mine and no problems, other guys have three times that many and they don't have any problems. The only thing is an increase in black smoke (during acc.) out the tale pipe. But how cares most of the time there is someone in a freshly washed white Suv riding my ass, they usually back off after 3rd gear

Hahaha, nice. Yeah I noticed my lower quarter panel was getting some black discoloration on it. Anyway, I think it sounds awesome too, especially when you hear that turbo screaming. Thanks for the insight.

I took off my muffler years ago, doesn't hurt the truck at all, yeah, mine is a little louder, but at idle sounds fine. It sounds great when your on it, it has set off a few car alarms. :rck:

Is there any problems passing emissions with straight pipes

I thought we are exempt from emissions testing???

And what exactly is the law on straight pipes. Are they legal or not. Are straight pipe stacks legal? I'm really considering stacks, but not if its illegal. At least with what i got now, I can swap in a muffler in 5 minutes. Anyone know???

You are required in Iowa to have a muffler or "equivalent" on the truck to make visual inspections. I know that Freightliner used a "box" with a baffle in it on many trucks as a muffy. The newer rams are no longer emmisions exempt. If it came with a cat the cat must be there. Not saying that you can't shitcan the guts......

The mufflers don't affect emissions. Check on stacks in NJ. I'm getting ready to install 4" from the turbo down and maybe make duals exiting in front of the rear wheels.

Most all states actually have it that it's illegal to have any exhaust modifaction that is not stock equivalent. I can't recall what state it was, but there were a few people on DTR that had stacks and got hit pretty hard with fines and had to take them out as well.

Diesels are still exempt from emissions even though the new ones have CATs on them, however I did not remove mine because I feel that one day it will come to emission testing on them and they have to pick a year to start requiring them on... good chance it's gonna be when they started coming from the factory with them.
