Sorry for being vague, but this has happened to my wife... not me. She says that after reaching about 60mph the van will start vibrating, shuttering, shaking violently... but doesn't do it every time.

I drove it today for about 20 minutes at 70mph and seemed just fine to me.

When it last happened to her she said she first tried to speed up to see if that made any difference, but she could not speed up... it just would not go any faster.

As she slowed down, the "frequency" of the shutter slowed down too... but was still there.

It only seems to happen at high speeds... the steering wheel shakes. This last time she turned on her flashers and limped back to the house in the slow lane.

This MAY be coincident with a brake job we just had done. The mechanic replaced the master cylinder and a rear wheel cylinder... the brakes are fine now.

I've read something here about bearings... could that be it? Would wheel alignment problems come and go? I'd say it was the lug nuts if we didn't have to get the brakes looked at 3 times (!)... and the vibrating started after the first time... surely the lug nuts were not left loose after the first, second and third visits on the brakes.

I'm no mechanic... just trying to avoid the dealer's repair shop, or at least know what to expect. Thanks in advance....

First thing......it is dangerous to be driving

I have repaired a few shakes on our van
over the years. Some simple, some not. Get to a
good mechanic if you are not a DIY person.

The fact that the steering shakes and your wife said
van would not speed up...............
I would check into brake system.
You mention a brake job but...I would check
You could have a caliper sticking out of position.
You could have a bad caliper and if pistion sticks...
your brake would not release.
Did you have rotors replaced
Any one of these could cause violent shaking

I had a bad outter tie rod and van shook
real bad at high speeds

get it checked soon

This sounds eerily similar to a problem I had on another vehicle. You may want to have your CV joints checked out along with what Rochester Joe advised. Good Luck!
