This has been an ongoing problem for me for 6 months now, car is running fine (2001) 60K miles. My brother told me to get a combustion cleaner additve(seafoam) for gas and to burn high octane gas, I usually get medium grade.
The light will come on and stay on for 2-3 weeks, then goes off. Stays off for about 2 weeks, comes back on. Its due for an inspection now (NC inspection) and don't think any shop will even do an inspection til I can get the light off. ????????????????? Also was told that at 60K miles the main belt needs to be replaced*this came from the dodge dealership a few months ago)

my check engine light came on the other day so I went to auto zone and rented their computer diagnosis handheld for $180 deposit. Ran the codes in the parking lot and came up with a P0441 which is an emissions code. Found the rubber hose had a crack at the end so I snipped off the end reconnected it and done. Returned the reader and got my deposit back. Took 30 minutes and cost me nothing. I suggest you rent a code reader from Auto Zone or whoever and run the code then search for that code here.

What you need to do is retrieve the diagnostic codes...anytime you get a check engine light you will also get some codes.

To check codes you need to turn off the car and then cycle the ignition key three times...turn it all the way until right before you are going to start the engine and then turn it back...do this three times and then the third time leave it on and the codes should be displayed on your dash. The codes should give you a good idea of the problem.

You do not need a code reader...it is built into your car.

If you need your car inspected you can clear the check engine light by removing the negative battery cable for a minute or so.

Main thing is retrieve the codes and figure out what is wrong.
