The original starter was getting some dead spots in the solenoid (sp?) I bought another one and put it in. I think I have it together correctly but when I attempt to start the car it just makes a "click sound once" My battery has 12.6 Volts across it. I have not checked the amperage when I crank it yet. now that I have the starter on the car is there a way to bypass the key and start the car? (can I put a wire from the (+) post to the positive on the starter?) will that kill me? :help:

Check your battery cables for corrosion. If you turn the key on and it clicks you are getting juice to it.( no need to jump it ). If the battery cables are in bad shape it will do that, you get enough juice to engage the starter but not enough to turn the flywheel.( probablly the ground). I have seen junk jumper cables do the same thing.
Any how get you some new battery wires. You might want to replace the wire to the starter also. Im not saying that I am right, but if you check the wires and they have the white/green powdery look to em you can rest assured that the problem is in hand!
I HOPE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Any how's GOOD LUCK!
OH and no it wont kill you long as its in neutral and you got the brake set. LOL dont want to run over yourself!!!!!!!!! HEHEHE

It was a bad ground on the starter wire! I might have not needed a starter after all. I tested my old one and it still works. Oh well. I did manage to kill my battery though. I bought a new one at Autozone and they told me that the alternator was not charging and I should buy one. I declined and drove 10 miles up the road to Advance Auto parts. they tested my alternator and said it was fine. Is Autozone trying to rip me off?

well the car died today. I needed to jump it. have any of you guys replaced your alternators? I heard it was not that common. should I replace the wires for the battery?

I took out the alternator tonight and got it tested at Advance Auto. they said it was good. so I have a new battery, working starter, and working alternator. should I buy a new set of battery cables? How can I test it to see if the computer is messed up? I have an OBD II reader but that only gives emission related info.

A scanner should be able to read any trouble code put out by the computer. Even stuff that you wouldn't think is emissions related will show up, including self-diagnostics (which would tell you if the PCM was bad).
I've replaced battery cables twice on my car - corrosion in New England really took its toll. All your connections have to be extremely clean and stupid tight. I keep a terminal cleaner handy and get at them every couple of months.
My alternator made it almost 200k miles before giving up. I know others that haven't even made it to 100k. I wouldn't say it's all that common any more, but it was for a while. I didn't get any codes, no battery light, just a noisy alternator for a couple hundred miles then the battery died. AAA got me home, and I changed out the alt in the snow...
