Hi there, I purchased a 1990 W150 a few months ago...I just had the dash apart and noticed that the clip for the check engine light was disconnected. I plugged it back in and sure enough the check engine light is on, the brake light is on, and the antilock light is on.

I've been getting terrible gas mileage (7-8mpg) and it's pretty gutless. The truck has 150,000 miles on it, it starts and idles alright.

Is there any way to check the computer codes yourself on these trucks?

I also noticed that it doesn't seem to downshift when you put the gas pedal to the floor...

If anyone can shed some light on my problems, I would greatly appreciate it!

thanks,
Murray

cycle the ignition key on off on off on off on with in 5 seconds and the check engine light will blink, blinks correspond with codes, and will end with a 55 which would be blink blink blink blink blink blink blink blink blink blink. kinda a pain in the ass to count blinks, or take it to like auto zone or some like store, and have them read the codes with a scanner.

good luck

I have a 89 Ram D100. It is having the same problem. When you go through the codes like you were told,it will probable say it is rich. Check your map sensor, temperature sensor, and throttle position sensoe. Also check the oxygen sensor. If you still find that this hasn't helped you might have a port plugged in the throttle body. Be careful in depressurizing the fuel system. You can damage the injectors. I had to install new injectors. They are about $125.00 a piece!! Your injectors could be worn out and big droplets are coming out instead of it spraying like they should. Your computer could also be bad. that cost me $210.00 with my old one for an exchange. I wish you luck, and if you need anymore help just let me know. I have the pressure regulator left to replace on mine. I am only getting about 150 miles on a tank.

For the downshifting problem check your kickdown linkage.
When the pedal is down to the carpet the linkage should be bottomed out.
