Hi

Here is some info for anyone thinking of using synthetic oil.

I waited till 13000 miles to try synthetic motor oil, I put in Mobil One.

I now have put about 5000 mi on since the oil change.

Engine is quieter when starting, which could possibly save on wear and tear.

No change in milage. I still average 20 on mixed driving and get as high as
23 on the road and as low as 17 in the city.

I believe I will go back to standard oil next oil change rather than pay
such a high price for Mobil one.

Dodge 2500 2wd. stock, automatic trans. 2:73 rear end.

Great truck, lots of power. Hope to have it for 500 k miles.

Enjoy your trucks
Carl

PS, Its a travisty that we pay 20c more for diesel fuel over gas when
diesel is easier to refine etc.....those dirty buzard oil companies....LOL

I'm new to diesel fuel, and I've noticed a huge difference in prices for diesel fuel from station to station.

Some places, the price is about the same as mid-grade unleaded. Other places have it for more than the premium unleaded.

I've been filling up at a 76 station that has been running their 87/89/91 grades for $2.49/$2.69/$2.85 respectively, but their diesel #2 is priced at only $2.29!!! You can't find even the lowest grade unleaded for only $2.29 around here, so I've been getting better fuel economy AND lower price per gallon since the day I traded the HEMI for the CTD.

This 76 station is where the local dealers fill up, so I don't know if that has anything to do with the price, but I'm going to take advantage of it for as long as I can.

I ran synthetic in my 99 and I whoudl change the filter at 5k and the oil at 10k. As long as the oil looked clean I didn't see a need to change it. I have heard of people going 12k or more but that scares me too much. To make it simple for myself I would go every other oil change changing the oil and change the filter in between. The price is about the same doing that.

Here's a link to Cummins' official 'White Paper' called
Secrets of Better Fuel Economy; The Physics of MPG

http://www.cummins.com/na/pdf/en/products/truck/MPG_Secrets_Whitepape.pdf

be sure to study the graph on page 12 about conventional versus synthetic oils inside the engine - then read the next pages about using syn inside gearboxes that don't get contaminated with combustion products and soot.

Thanks for the replies.

I have about 11k on the mobil 1 oil change now. Since I see no
difference in milegae etc. I will go back to the original oil.

For fuel prices always check the truck stops, most have diesel fuel for a lot less than the stations in town. Since 1998 I have mostly used truck stops to buy my fuel and its usually 6 cents a litre, about 20 cents a gallon US, cheaper :)
