I was just checking out my maintenance book, and if I'm not mistaken, I should be changing the fuel filter every 15k miles.
Is this a difficult job, or is it something someone like me (fairly mechanical, just new to diesels) can do?
If I decide not to do it, what should a dealership charge, roughly?
thanks,

It's pretty simple, all Diesels I've worked on have a spin on filter similar to an Oil Filter.

It's very simple. the only problem is that sometimes the truck is hard to start after you install the new filter....

1. Place a container to catch fuel under the drain line coming from the fuel filter canister

2. Open the drain valve (Yellow lever) by turning it counter clockwise about 90 degrees.

3. Using a 1-1/8" hex socket head wrench, remove the fuel filter cap and element assembly.

4. Remove the used filter element from the cap by pulling loose from the retainer pegs on the filter cap. Ensure that the gasket on the bottom of the element is still intact

5. Remove and discard the o-ring on the cap. Carefully clean the mating surfaces.
6. Wipe water-in-fuel (WIFF) sensor probes with a soft cloth to remove any debris

7. Apply a coat of diesel fuel on the new o-ring and gasket on the new filter element.

8. Install the new o-ring on the filter cap

9. Install the new fuel filter element on the cap.

10. Install and tighten the filter element and cap assembly slowly, allowing fuel to soak into the element. CAUTION: Do not cross-thread the cap during installation.

11. Close drain valve.

12. Bump starter with the key and wait until you hear fuel pump stop running.
13. Bump starter with the key the second time and wait for fuel pump to stop running.
14. Start the engine and check for leaks.
