Gotta question bout the 98 neon's fuel filters. just got my neon and was doing some basic upkeep, oil change, fuel filter, air, etc etc... any ways got under the front end to change the oil and someone rounded out the oil drain plug. so that has to wait till the weekend, any ways where is the flippin fuel filter on these things? Because i checked the fuel lines all the way back, i saw there is a plastic "sending unit" in the fuel tank. i'm thinking that the filter is a silver can coming out of the plastic holder thing in the tank.

thanks for any help.

the fuel filter is located on top of the fuel pump module and will come off separately, it is also the fuel pressure regulator, so I'm sure this is a spendy unit. hope this helps

If you wanted to you could always add a fuel filter nearer the block from AutoZone or any other cars parts place. I did this a while back on a old '75 cutless I had.

this isn't as easy on a F/I engine as it is on a carburated engine, because the new cars have to have "hard" line in the engine compartment.

cool heh, just trying to figure out why the neon is studdering some. i figured it was the fuel filter needin to be changed, guess ill just replace all of the fuel system, sendin unit and all. just to be on the safe side. then i have to cut my oil drain plug out bc im guessing some DA ran it up with an impact gun bc its completely rung off. its just straight rounded off. so, but itll be worth it when i get done with it.

thanks for all the help tho

The fuel filter on the mid-96 and up Neons is designed to last the life of the car... or at least the fuel pressure regulator, which can easily go 200,000 miles (236k mile in my case). The filter does not require periodic replacement.

If the CEL is lit, finding the cause of the stuttering is much easier. Otherwise, there are a host of sensors and components that could be slightly faulty, but not bad enough to throw a code - spark plugs, wires, coilpack, injectors, computer, O2 sensors, cat, crank sensor, cam sensor, air temp sensor, manifold pressure sensor, water temp sensor, throttle postion sensor, or any of the wiring to the componenets listed, as well as wiring to the pump or anything else associated with fuel, air, or spark... The fuel pump/filter would not be high on my list. Fuel pumps tend to just stop, not get tempermental. Again, mine has lasted 236k miles and counting, although I keep a spare in the trunk just in case.

Best of luck!

The fuel pressure regualator went out on my '96 at 44k miles. At the time you could not buy just the regulator/filter. You had to buy the entire fuel pump assembly. :VHOT:

I bought the entire assembly, took the regulator out of the new assembly and put it on the old.

Car now has 190k~ miles.

Usually when the regulator starts to go, it will cause the car to crank a few seconds before starting. If yours isn't doing that I would leave it alone.
