I am a newbie, and I am in need of getting some new tires for my diesel. I have never owned such a heavy truck, and want to get a good tire. I drive a lot of miles every year to the construction job sites. I am on the pavement 90% of the time, and want something that will last me a while. I am have talked to some guys that buy tires every year cuz they buy cheap ones.
I have seen some using the Bridgestone Duelar AT, obviously some Michelin AT (stock tires on some years). I dont want a soft tread tire.
what do you run, and have you had good luck with them? how many miles do you have on them, etc......
I will probably upgrade my size from 265-75 to 285-75's.
-What load range are you runnin.....E or D ?

I don't have the size tire you are looking at, but I'm running load range E on 35/12.5/20's. The Toyo M/T Open Country's are one of the best 4x4 tires made right now. Great driveability on the road, aggressive off-road, quiet, long lasting.
If you really are "off" road 10% of the time (which is more than most people), you may want a tire that is able to perform off road.

If you look at the trucks that are parked at most of the construction sites where I live you will see diesel pick-ups with 6-10" lifts and up to 38" mud tires. Of course here in Northern California developers are soooooooo desperate for land they are building where most developers would never dream. So a lot of sites are mud and rock. But still most of the trucks I see are a bit overboard for a work truck. If you want a good street tire check into a Toyo Open Country A/T, I think you can get them in an E load range. Or you could check out the BFG A/T tires, they are rated D but last pretty good, and work good off-road for an A/T tire. Just remember if you use mud tires on a LOADED DOWN DIESEL PICK-UP don't expect even the best to last over 15,000 miles, Notice I capitalized "LOADED DOWN DIESEL PICK-UP" With A/T you might get 30-40K miles. But this all depends on your driving habits and tire pressure.

As you can see in my sig, Im running the BFG 315's and have nothing but good things to say about them. This is my 2nd pair on a 4x4 and they perform great on road and off. The first set I owned, I got about 60,000 miles out them. As far as the load rating goes, just make sure to check the manufacturers specs on weight capacity, not just the letters....For example, when I first looked at the 315's, I noticed that they were only a load range D. My stock tires were load range E and since I tow alot, I wanted the same load rating. But, after looking at the specs on their website, my stock tires 265/75/17 E were rated for the same weight as the 315's. So, even though my 315's say "D", they will carry the same weight.

right now i am still running the stock size (235/85/16) on my 92 CTD i have the BFG a/t's as, with only good things to say. i agree with Deke, look at the actual load rating... i have the BFG book....
235/85/16E..... 3042@80psi Diameter: 31.8 Width: 9.3 on 6.5
265/75/16D..... 3042@65psi Diameter: 31.8 Width: 10.7 on 8.0
285/75/16D..... 3305@65psi Diameter: 32.9 Width: 11.3 on 8.0
315/75/16D..... 3195@50psi Diameter: 34.7 Width: 12.1 on 8.5
i will probably trade up to a 265/75 on my next tire change (with wider rims) since they are the same height it won't mess with the odometer.

the stock tires suck, upgrade fast... these rugged trails chuck rocks like an iraqi! plus im almost out of tread in the rear tires after 12k miles in 3 months.

I'm running the toyo as well and I like them alot. I'm running 38" on 18" rims and it works very well.

hey deke, looks like BFG's letter rating is directly related to the number of plys in the tire... 6 ply= c.... 8ply=d.... 10ply=e but a lager size of tire in a lower ply can sometimes carry just as much if to more than the smaller tire.

My dad has an '01 diesel with about 35k miles on it. It has the factory michelins still and they have tons and tons of tread left on them. He also told me the other day that he has never rotated them and they have even wear on the front and rears. I guess driving like an old lady pays off......lol.

Yeah...I did ALOT of research on them before I bought them mainly because my cousin had a 97 f250 and he cheaped out and bought some tires from one of those BJ's/sams club type places. He towed our equipment trailer one time and had splits in the sidewalls. When I asked him what letter the load range was, he had no idea....haha....turns out, they were a C rated tire.

Goodyear MT/R's come in load ranges C, D, and E. They wear really well, perform great off-road, and low road noise.
Once i get my 3" lift on, ill be buying the LT315/75R16 load range D's. They are rated to almost 3200 pounds at 50 mph, which is more than some of their smaller E rated tires. But the smaller E rated tires are rated to 80 mph too. But who tows at 80 mph anyway?

Are you sure you mean 16s? I dont think the rims will fit the 2500's brakes.

yeah, the rims i have now are 16"s...so i hope the new 16" tires will fit. otherwise i have more pressing problems than new tires!

Hemi Freak and others, will the 35/12.5/20 only fit with a 3" lift or higher? I'm struggling with trying to uderstand what I can fit at the stock level vs. minimum lift needed to tuck some very nice tires and rims. Added to that, whatever I do will only be for "good weather" use, as a plow will get slapped on for winter and I'll put the original equipment tires back on.

A leveling kit will do, just make sure you get the right wheels (off-set/back-spacing)

I agree...Eddy that is a great looking truck. And Nuth, yes a leveling kit is sufficient (that is pretty much what mine is).
I am running the same tires as Eddy (Toyo Open County MT 35/12.5/20), just a different wheel.

Definitely two sweet ass trucks there guys. I just wanted to drop a little warning on the BFG owners out there. I like the BFG a/t's, and I plan on getting them, but if you're the kind of guy that lets the tread get really low before replacing them BE CAREFUL. We were out hunting w/ my friends 03 s-10 and got a flat that left us stranded (the spare was mysteriously missing from underneath the truck...probably due to his driving), not surprising because the tire maybe had a 1/4" tread left. When we tried to get it fixed to get us by, the tech wouldn't do it and pointed something out to us. There was split where the tire molds meet (running across the width of the tire) on the inside of the tire. We all figured that without the flat, the return trip at highway speed would of caused a disasterous tire seperation. I'm not sure if this was a fluke but i figured i'd put it out there for you guys to hear...

hey ny360r/t,
I've asked hemi about those. His truck looks awesome and I think in particular those fender flares look fantastic. The manufacturer is ATS .. I did a google search and here's a http://www.autoanything.com/products/product_gnn.aspx?p_id=2133&se=ats_fender_flares site that sells them. I haven't shopped prices yet but I'll be picking up a set for my new truck, once I get her at the end of the month.

Nuth is correct. They are ATS flares, and I think they complete the look of my truck better than almost anything else. Plus, they just look like they are part of the truck and belong.
Thanks for the compliments.

I just measured...
82" to the top of the cab
59" to the top rail of the bed at the tailgate
I hope that helps.

helps a lot!! Thanks ! :)
I met with the builder of my house yesterday and we were discussing the garage door height and the garage opening. He said I could go to 8' high on the garage. So, I was wanting to make sure that was going to be ok.
The height of your truck is exactly what I'm looking for. I can sleep better at night now knowing it'll be fine :)

I have to agree with firecop on the Nitto tires. I am very pleased with them on the quality of tire. The ride is really near stock and they are quiet as well. Unless something goes wrong before they are worn out...Nitto will have my business again.
