Just got back from my trip, Drove from Norfolk Va. to St. Louis mo. 970 miles.
Got 19 to 20 MPG. Turned the back part of the bumper blue/brown right behind the exh pipe. It is coming off, but the snow storm we got is making it hard to work outside.

a 12 valve 2wd truck like you have should be getting better than 15½ mpg. Those were mileage machines. I average around 18 mpg with mine. And that is a mix of some city driving stop and go, some interstate driving at 75mph, and some 2 lane blacktop driving. When loaded with my GTX on the trailer, I get around 15mpg. I could probably get a little better if my right foot wasn't so darn heavy :dunno:

HO Cummins,
Yes, the mileage will pick up a bit as the engine breaks in and all the valves seat themselves. Putting a moderate load on the engine will help it break in. Pulling moderate weights, climbing long hills, etc. Not necessarily revving it up, but making it work just a bit....

Is there any general concensus or rule regarding 12V vs 24V in terms of one getting better fuel mileage than the other?

I own a cummins 2500 from 1992 12v and am getting 8.5 kilometer per 1 liter.
If i calculated it right that's equal to 24.9 mls with 1 gallon.
I'm not completely sure, but i assumed 1 mile = 1.6 kilometer and a gallon is 4.7 liter.
Correct me if i'm wrong.
Henk
btw. mine's a 2wd with tonneau cover, and truck was not loaded or towing.

here is a link to a web site that can give you more ways to convert mileage than you will ever need...
Scrolling down to about the 10th conversion box, inputting 8.5 km/l converts to 19.99mpg, or 20mpg to round off.
That sounds right on the mark for a 2wd with a tonneau, unloaded.

26mpg on the HO. Off the lot it got 20mpg, advanced to 22 at about 4000 miles, then we got Dodge to put a 60hp70tq chip in it, increasing it 4mpg

I just bought a '04 HO 48RE QC SB 4x4. I pulled 16.5 mpg during the first 500 miles. City and Highway between 55-75 MPH. Wow what a nice change from the DOG 4.7 Gas. What was I thinking when I bought that truck.

I have an 2003 Ram 3500 QC LWB SRW 4X4 with the Cummins HO and the 48re Tranny....have got as low as 14 and as high as 23 mpg depending on load and how heavy I am on the pedal. My 2001 Ram 2500 QC LWB 4X4 gets as high as 20 and as low as 13 with the standard output 24V Cummins and 47re Tranny. And right now Diesel is 1.45/gallon vs. 1.80/gallon gas.

there's 3.78 litre's per US gallon & 4.54 litre's per imperial(canadian) gallon
1 km = 0.62 miles or 1 mile = 1.6 km
so that's 19.9 MPG usd & 23.9 MPG canadian

We have a 2002 cummins 5 spd, and we get 20 if I keep it under 70 mph, and 13-14 when we pull our 26ft camper.
I don't think I will ever own a gas pickup again.

Right now we are getting 15.3 MPG according to the trip computer. I have to wait for it to get empty again before I can calculate the actual MPG figure. This is all City driving and mostly short trips.
:)
I forgot to mention I have a 03 2500 HO CTD with a 6 speed manual. I did add 2" Revtech coil spacers and BFG TA/KO 35x12.5x17 tires on the stock rims.

I have a 99 Quad cab 4X4 and I usually get 20.3 or so. My Wife can get a little better than I do but she is to light footed. I say let the big dog eat. I'm also running 5 inch exhaust and an Edge Comp which seems to have improved the mileage a little over stock.

Hey smokin99 how do you like your 5" exhuast ............. I was thinkin of getting a 5" but everyone tells me it's overkill all I need is a 4
I was looking at the bullydog 5" .........wich one do you have
and how does it sound :)

Well size wise it's overkill but I love the sound. I bought mine from big exhaust.com. I'm not running their muffler though. I'm running a little 18 inch long 5 inch resonator that I got from RHarvey over on the TDR. It took the edge off the loud drone from when I was trying to run it straight piped.

I've got 220,000 on my truck and get average of about 16.5mpg. It's my communter vehicle....so stop and go....crusing.....whatever. I've pulled my parents 35 foot camper and got 14. I'm also heavy footed with a slightly modified truck. I'll be dyno'ing the truck on the 18th of October. HP and Torque numbers will be told then.....Guessin 300hp and 675torque.

I just got back from a 2000 mile trip pulling a car hauler 18,000 lbs GVW and empty mostly I got 16 MPG NY City, Baltimore, Maryland, to Coatesville PA back to Cumberland Maryland, back to MA.
Empty figuring by hand I get 19.875 Average on the overhead display I get 25 MPG the injector size throws it off.
But what ever you get that is what it is. Some do get 14-17 some 18-20 same truck; don’t know what to tell you.
