What I would like to know is what turbos are each of the generations of rams equiped with and wether they have and internal wastegate? If any can answer that would be greatly appreciated.

I believe they come with a holst hx35 and hy35, not sure what years have which........
my 99 has the hx35 and the waste gate is attached to the turbo if that helps ......

I believe the 12 valve versions came with the larger hy35 turbos. My '01 also has the hx35. I am not sure if the HO diesels have the larger or smaller one. I will do some digging and find out. All the Cummins diesel turbos are Holset models, if that helps at all.

dodge em is exactly correct...the 3rd generation ram comes with the HX 35 as well..the gains are made with the common rail injection system.....
if your ram is a 12 valve and NOT intercooled, the wastegate is external...all others are internaly gate (bled off), as to not "over-drive" the turbo

cool, thanx all of you.
Another question I have is what kind of boost pressures do they turbos give at say 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 rpm's the answers will also be greatly appreciated and make my decision onto which to use on my dakota.

the waste gate on my hx35 is factory set for 22 psi (that's the max boost I can build, unless I get a boost fooler and a bleed elbow)
I've been doing a bit of reasearch and the hx 35 is good for about 350 - 400 hp on our cummins diesels ....
after 400hp most guys step up to a holset hx40 .......

On mine, Ive never seen any more boost than 19 psi. The only mod that I have is a K&N filter.

red121572- at what rpm does it hit 19lbs
I want to run 10lbs as a max for now for when I take it to the track for bad weather I wanna turn it down to 1 or 2 lbs and everyday anywhere inbetween probably 6 to 8 lbs. I would like for the adjusted boost pressure to come on at around 2500 to 3000rpm up to redline which is 5500.

Uhhhhhhh.......
I dont know for sure, but I would have to guess after 2300 RPMs:dunno:

you have your cummins spinnin at 5,000 rpm?
dodge_em

I don't think he has a Cummins spinning at 5,000 rpm. I think what DROPT_98_DAKOTA is talking about is installing the Cummins turbo on his Dakota gas motor. One important element of the turbo on the Cummins is that it is oil cooled, and this is a big consideration when looking at exhaust gas temperatures (EGT's). Perhaps a smaller quicker spooling turbo from the venerable turbo cars of the 80's and 90's would be better. They are liquid cooled, and can support higher EGT's as a result. Just a thought. My turbo on my Cummins is running 10psi of boost continuously when I am cruising down the interstate at 70-75mph. Keeping boost to only a couple of psi would really be hard to do, and would not come any where near utilizing the boost effects of the turbo.

I took the truck back to the dealer today and they tell me the slop in the
turbo is normal,as a matter of fact the mechanic tells me he has installed new turbo's with more clearance than mine.I used to work on 18 wheelers a long time
ago (30 years or so)and when we found a cummins with ANY up and down ,sideways
play we changed it out,so i guess the industry standards are a little different nowdays but that turbo will be on my mind everytime i'm going down the hiway from now on.

I also found out just how this dealership checks turbo's or at least this is what i was told, they take the inlet hose off the turbo and start the truck,if the turbo spins there's nothing wrong with it",and that statement came straight from the shop with me looking him straight in the eyes!

Where did you buy your truck?
I went to work, pulled the inlet tube off our 94 cummins with 245,xxx miles on it. There is no sloppy movement in it.
I really would like to see your dealers face if we could put my work truck beside yours and see what he has to say!!

I took it back to the dealer where i bought it and was told it was normal,I also pulled the inlet hose off another truck, either a 01 or 02 with 5,000 mi. and it
was also loose,up and down play,so i guess this is normal?.Thanks

I wish you could do that but there so narrow minded it wouldn't matter,it all boils down to what the "mechanic says".
I bought it at Greenville Dodge in Greenville Texas and now i i'm getting the shaft on some other issues,i sent a buddy there to buy a 02 new dakota and a salesman told him "we don't keep things like that around" and walked off,my buddy went to another dealership and bought one. Thanks
