I got a 91 power ram with the anemic efi 318, it needs more
power and slows way down in the overdrive mode, anyone
got any ideas why this 160hp wonder made it to production
with such a poor exhaust and intake set-up?
I wish it were a magnum only a year newer with the 220hp
real aceleration and better mileage too.
This truck is my winter wonderland vehicle, and putting a lot of
$ is not an option for me, there is perfomance camshaft for
the 89-91 roller cam motors with efi,but it requires new rocker
arms, and pushrods. A kit with an aluminum intake upgrade,
is not made to the best of my knowledge.
A crate 300hp 360 would be a quick fix but the computer-and
efi would need updates to the injector size, and eprom- to
the computer to run the newer rocket.:dunno: no 2barrel efi
intakes are made for this odd varant of the mopar BREED.
The computer upgrade avail is only good for 15hp,what a joke!
better heads would help too. I have owned 2 magnum 318's
and they are truly a giant leap over the holley designed efi
piece of emissions crap I currently own.

i feel ya man, i have a 89 ram 318, if you don't have emissions i would rip all that stuff off put some headers and good exhaust on it and port and polish the heads. you could always swap out the roller cam for a hydraulic cam, you just need the cam, lifters, push rods. just my .02 cents good luck

or swap to a 2-bbl carb and regular elec. ignition. get a 2-bbl carb and intake of a 360, it'll bolt right on. it'll make more power and still get good milige. may have to change accelerator cables too.

The 4 od 518 is weak now, so I got to have it beefed up first. No emission tests here anymore, so a crate motor may just find its way in near future, a little
fuel pressure regulation and a new 4b carb on a new 300-360 will get
at least what this 318 does for mileage now especially with a bad lockup
convertor on the transmission right now. Hate to say it but my work van
a 93 ram with with the 3.9 magnum 6 has more power right now,
but that has the the old 3spd trans with a shift kit for some fun.

I do have another question about returning to a non roller cam, will anything
have to done to the rocker arms other than using adjustable ones?
The computer set up would look great in the garbage on this truck,
I have converted many older 318,and slant sixs back to reg carbs in the
days of lean burn crapola, power and mileage were improved on them.
distrib kits are reasonable enough new yet. All ready have dual exhaust
-true duel from manifolds back, with 2 free flow converter's,exhaust is
a heartthrob set up cheaper than the old cat converter was alone,
2 glasspacks exiting in front of the rear wheels -old school sounds.
the original crossover pipe was very restrictive because of the route
is ran with 4wheel drive,it is no-more and it made some differance, not
enough for my tastes. Anyone know of a cheap 2.0 liter mitsubishi turbo
motor around, my sister in laws old car 130,000 of neglect needs a bottom
end knocking real good.

hi
i don't believe you will have to do anything with the rockers, as long as you go with a hydraulic cam and not a mechanical cam, i would go the carb route with a 4barrel intake with a 2barrel to 4 barrel plate ( if your set on a 2bbl carb) , with a set of headers a mild cam and a intake with a properly tuned carb i would think you should be in the 250-300 hp power mark,
hot rod a few months ago put together a 400hp 318 that the bottom end had over 200k miles on it, and the end price was like 1500 bucks for it. good luck and keep us updated. sorry i can't help ya on the 2.0 motor

for the Mitibushi Motor take it apart and remore the banlance shafts... The rear balance shaft in those engine spin the bearing quite often...
I tore my engine down and removed the rear balance shaft (hacked it off)
and did the bearing rotation on the front shaft... The engine is stronger and less likly to blow a timing belt again... the Engine is not shaking either...
