Which do you prefer or recommend? :dunno: Synthetic oil or Petroleum oil, and if petroleum, do you recommend a 4X4 oil (like Quaker state ) or just a standard perf. oil? I do not do what I would call a considerable amount of offroading. Thanks in advance.

quaker States 4x4 oil is a synthetic blended oil. I dont know how much it helps but I use it in my brothers Jeep Wrangler and he goes off-roading at least twice a week and we haven had any problems with the motor and how it is running. :dunno:

The choice is yours....I dont see a real difference between the two cuz I dont keep cars long enough but supposively the synthetic is suppose tocut down the wear and tear on your motor in the long run. Ultimately the choice is yours. I run synthetic oil in my R.T cuz that is what the original owner was putting in it so I want to see how this motor looks on the inside if I keep her long enough to do a rebuild on the motor.

OK thanks. That helps to know that you use synthetic in yours. I am just trying to get a general idea of what others are using. I thought it was a bad thing to have to see the inside of your engine. I like seeing the outside and only the outside, cause if I'm seeing the inside it is gonna cost me. Thanks

I am a mechanic and I am trying to start my own speedshop so I see the inside of motors all the time ...if it isnt at work it is at home :D Keep us up to date with what you decide to run!

My Dodge dealer put the oil change schedule at every 5000 miles???? Has anyone else seen this or recommend it? I always did it at a little over 3000 miles.

Synthetic can go further than regular oil, usually more than 5,000, but if it a Synthetic Blend, then 5,000 sounds right. Is it regular oil or Synthetic Blend?

Actually AMSOIL has a 25,000 mile or 1year(which ever comes first) gaurrenty(sp), as long as you change the oil filter @ 12,500 miles or 6months(which ever comes first.) And the have never had to use their Gaur. during their 22years.

Or was it 29 years.......Something like that

Alot of people are saying it is okay to go 5000 miles, even on regular oil. The oil today is much better that it used to be. I have also heard that if you use synthetic front to rear you could gain up to 10 hp because of less friction. I am not a 100% believer yet, but it sounds good. I use the high milage oil in mine and I swear by it. Before I bought the truck it sat for awhile, everything in the engine dried out. Everytime I started the truck alittle smoke would come out. I started to runnning that oil and it hasn't smoked since.

I called them and asked them and they said they did not put synthetic in it. I am going to get it changed this week anyway since I just drove it to Missouri and back this weekend, so I put over 2000 miles on it in one weekend. Hunting trip, and the D was such a pleaseure to drive, it was almost a little too comfortable at times when I needed less confort to keep me awake. I love that Dodge though so I want to keep it happy.

BTW, scalski, that AMSOIL looks good. Did you get it from a local distributor or order it from their website?

One my students' father is or was a distributor for AMSOIL and also drove (or still drives )a school bus where they live in Indiana. Supposedly the engine has a bazillion miles with no tear down etc etc. Haven't used it yet but will when he (the student) brings me some.

If you go to a quick change place they all tell me to change the synthetic at 5k, ? spend twice the money for the same distance. My co. just change it from 5k to 4k. They give me a Chevy Astro with a 4.3 V6 and at about 3500 the oil is getting black. Every GM motor I have drove breaks the oil around that. I have a 92 Ford Airostar and I can go 4500 to 5k and its starting to get brown. My truck has 4k on this change and its black, fesh oil tomarrow. Because I have 3 sets of wheels and drive the co. van home every day oil changes come when the oil starts to break down

Actually, I went to the guy's(the owner of the www.pecuniary.com website) house and I saw his 1970 Plymouth GTX 440 c.i. Six Pack, and it was awesome, I keep reffering people to him, I should get a commission!:flippy: J/K

synthetic should last a lot longer than petroleum. Really synthetic shouldn't break down at all. just keep the oil filter changed and I use Mobil 1. Costs me 55 dollars every oil change but I change it every 6-7 thousand miles. Just stay out of the redline all the time and the oil will pay for itself.

Walmart sells the 5 qt Mobil 1 jugs for $17.88.
That plus a good filter and you are in it for less than $25.
I still change mine between 3k & 4k due to driving less than 3 miles back and forth to work.

From the first oil change on my truck I have used 10w30 Mobil 1 synthetic oil with a K&N Gold oil filter. I change the oil myself every 3 months no matter what. It only costs me around $30 per oil change for the oil & filter, but I know I am getting quality products and protecting my truck's engine. I had my front & rear end serviced and the Dodge dealer put in synthetic or synthetic additive there too.

AMSOIL Synthetic Motor Oils

Because AMSOIL 5W-30's synthetic formulation resists oxidation so well, it runs naturally cleaner than petroleum motor oils. AMSOIL 5W-30 also contains special detergent/dispersant additives that, when tested after tens of thousands of miles of use in the crankcase, still exhibit outstanding deposit control. This combination of natural detergency and advanced additive package keeps AMSOIL 5W-30 effective for up to 25,000 miles or one year in non-turbocharged gasoline-fueled cars.

SERVICE LIFE

In personal cars and light-duty trucks with non-turbocharged gasoline engines: drain oil at 25,000 miles or one-year intervals, whichever comes first.

In turbocharged gasoline engines, motorcycles, ATVs, marine craft and occasionally used gasoline engines: drain oil at intervals up to three times as long as the intervals recommended by the engine manufacturer or one year, whichever comes first.

In high performance and racing engines: drain oil according to the findings of used oil analysis.

In light-duty and non-turbocharged diesel engines: drain oil at intervals up to twice as long as those recommended by the engine manufacturer or one year, whichever comes first.

In fleet and industrial engines: drain oil at intervals up to three times as long as those recommended by the engine manufacturer if the findings of a used oil analysis program support the extended drain intervals.

If the vehicle is equipped with an AMSOIL Oil Filter, the filter should be changed at 12,500-mile or six-month intervals (whichever comes first) in gasoline engines and 7,000-mile or six-month intervals (whichever comes first) in diesel engines. Non-AMSOIL oil filters should be changed at the engine manufacturer's recommended filter change intervals.

If you add one of these, you'll filter out every bit of the contaminants in your engine which reduces engine wear.

By the way it is carbon from the combustion chamber that causes the oil to turn black and Crappy Fram filters don't help either. I'm not a dealer just a preferred customer who believes in Amsoil products.
