Hey! I'm new to this side of the forum and have a question. I have a Friend that has a 2000, 4.7, 4X4 Dak and just had ball joints replaced under the recall and of course the dealer did their job by finding every little thing that was wrong to squeeze as much out of him as they could ( he's only 21) and he turned them down on everything (proud of him). :rck:

I plan on helping him to take care of some of the items they came up with and one of them was, he has one break caliper that's riding on the rotor (not dis-engaging) how hard is it to rebuild the caliper. I did this on a f*rd once and it involved replacing the "O" rings and it was not easy getting it out of the body or to get it back in, or would it be easier to relpace it than to rebuild? I have not seen it yet, it maybe all bull$hit.

calipers are pretty simple and not many parts are involved. i suggest doing the rebuild as replacing it will cost a bit more.

As 1SICKRT stated, they are pretty easy with minimal parts. I would check the price on one already rebuilt. Some of the time rebuilt ones are cheap enough that's it not worth the effort to do it yourself. Also, if there is any damage from rubbing or rust, you may risk a leaky caliper after rebuild.

DONRAM, good thought about prior damage I would hate to rebuild it and find it leaking.

plus theres no point of fixing something if you dont know what caused it to go bad in the first place.

you're sure it's the caliper and not the flex hose? hoses will collapse and allow apply pressure through but not passive release pressure back out. are both pads(inner and outer) worn out? a shot ouetr pad may just be seized sliders(you apply brakes, the caliper moves out, but the sticky slider will not slide back to release under passive pressure). This wears the outer pad more than the inner. BTW, rebuilt calipers are the way to go if needed.

I had a seized caliper on my 98 R/T a few months ago I went ahead and replaced both calipers and hoses. The calipers were only $60 (Canadian) and the hose were about $40 a piece. The Funny thing is when I took the other caliper off the piston was cracked almost in half so it was a good thing I bought both sides. I would just make sure and check both its cheap insurance and brakes are really important.

What if the inner pad is the pad with the most wear? My outer pads are in great shape on both the passinger and drivers sides. The inner pads are to the metal and the inside of the rotors looked like they have been boiling. They are blistered. I have never in my life seen anything like it.

sliders could be siezed allowing only the inboard pad to apply pressure. check em when you replace pads(possably rotors if they're bad)
