I have a 1985 B250 van that has been sitting for four years. Today I dropped the tank to see why fuel was not getting to the carb. The sending unit and inside of the tank is covered with this stuff that looks like rust, but it rubs off leaveing the metal shiny. The fuel was old and smelled like varnish. The inside of the tank is covered with small balls (like B.B.'s) of this stuff. What is this stuff and what can I use to dissolve it and get it out of my fuel tank? Thanks.

Sounds like fuel varnish. First add some fresh gas, slosh it around and then dump it out. Carb cleaner works well to break this stuff up. Can you access it to physically scrub any of this?

Some radiator specialty shops can take your gas tank and boil it out leaving it clean. Is your tank steel or plastic? If it's plastic then it can't be boiled out, just flushed out with water.

The sending unit hole is too small to get my hand into. I can only get a small portion of the tank with a brush. I will try the fresh gas and the carb cleaner. I have a steel tank, so I may have it boiled out or steam cleaned with water. Thanks for great ideas.
I really love my van and hope to have it on the road soon.
