Hi, all. I've got a 96 Stratus, V6, 2.5L with 90+ k miles on it. Still runs like a scared cat, but the oil light has been coming on since ~80k miles. At that time it was only when the car was warmed up, and at idle. Now it is nearly constant, on even at 60 mph. The oil is changed 3-4 k miles, nothing out of the ordinary noted in the oil, color or smell, or debris. There is oil getting to the rocker cover, as I get a bath when I remove the oil cap. My thinking is that the oil sensor (located near the oil filter?)is bad. any one see this before and can concur? Any other checks I can make w/o removing or tearing the engine apart?

Thanks in advance

Is the engine making any ticking or knocking noises? If not, then you probably are getting oil pressure. One way to be sure is to remove the oil pressure sensor and plumb in a mechanical gauge and measure the pressure this way. If all is okay, then it's either the sensor or perhaps a bad wire.

thanks for the reply.
No unusual noises, ticking, clicking, or otherwise. I think I'll try the mechanical gauge idea.

Thanks,

the oil pressure switch might be bad. seems to be a common problem on the 2.5's. My fathers sebring's sensor went and had to be replaced

Update on problem. Tested pressure- was 30-40 psi at idle warm(50+ at idle cold), 50+ at 3K (warm). Replaced switch, problem cleared.
Thanks for the info, folks, this is how these forums should work!

I Recently Had The Same Issue With A 1999 Stratus Es 2.5l. Oil Light Fluttering At The Lowest Warm Idle About 550 Rpm. Did Mechanical Check Of Oil Pressure Warm Idle Between 6 And 7 Psi And About 65 Psi At 3000 Rpm. Note Dodge Specs. Are Min. 6 Psi At Warm Idle And Warm Idle Between 500 And 1000 Rpm. Replaced Switch, Had A Hard Time Finding One Everyone Out. Thought That Fixed The Light Coming On But After Driving Some Distance With Vehicle Totoaly Warmed Up Light Faintly Came On At Idle But Not With The Frequency As Before. Tweeked The Idle Up So No Low Idle Is About 700 Rpm Light Has Not Come On Since.
