Ok I was reading an article that said that the 2001-2002 automatic diesels have a smaller 9cm turbo on it. while the others have 12cm turbos. Plus I have been finding out that the automatic trucks are retarted some how to produce less hp and torque, is it only because of the smaller turbo? or is it other things also? Plus if I can get a bigger turbo can I just bolt it on? is it recommended?

Turbos are a science that I haven't dabbled a lot in yet. The bigger housings will produce more boost, but will also take a bit longer to spool up, also known as turbo lag. I have an '01 with the hx35 as well. New turbos are expensive. There are mods that can be done a lot more affordably that will help with performance. I don't know that the smaller turbo is attributable to lower horsepower. I think the power in the automatic is the same as with the 5 speed. The 6 speeds came with a High Output version of the engine, perhaps that is what you are thinking about. I can do a little more poking around and see what I can come up with as far as the relationship between the turbo size and performance, and also what is required to do a turbo swap if you want. Perhaps 2 turbos is better than one....
